See Mike, you ask about success stories and this is what you get. We can't even agree what a success is. I guess it was a dificult question. There will be plenty more, and many more answers... nobody said it would be easy...

This should give you an idea what you are getting into.

Yeah, that nobody seems to be successful! Only 5% of traders are successful.

Yeah i understand what you mean now. In the past like 5 days my life has actually changed because of someone that i didnt even know but then lent my thoughts out to him. I think i can finally grasp what success is, and its great man....

After saying this several times before, I must say it again, the key to being successful in trading is discipline. I can't say this enough. If you are just starting out, you can't open a live account right away because you will lose it. Your trading discipline isn't developed yet. You will know when you develop it. It takes at least a year to develop trading discipline.

Another point I must make is if you can't be profitable in a demo account then there is no reason to go live until you are consistently profitable in one. What is the probability of someone that can't be successful in a demo becoming successful in a live account?

You want a success story. If success means being profitable, then I am a success. The way I did it and am doing it is through discipline, patience, and hard work.

If you want to be successful, it takes discipline, patience, and hard work. Did you hear me, discipline, patience and hard work. It takes time and if you are willing to work hard, you will succeed. It will not happen over night. Never give up.

I'm with you on that dude. Now I am a "live" trader, and yes, I will have to reload the account again, but I have learned from previous mistakes and I will get to the point of "insane" profitability with a lot of hard work. Here is the thing with demo trading....while you learn systems and indicators and all that good stuff, you are missing THE BIGGEST PIECE OF THE ENTIRE TRADING PUZZLE, and that is the mental aspect of making and losing money. That, in and of itself is the biggest factor to success in trading, or any kindo of speculation for that matter, even in poker. People who demo trade remind me of people who play online poker with "play money". Well, it's a nice tool to learn a little about the game, but the money has no meaning to you. You are completely detached and disassociated from the money because it's play money, thus you really aren't LEARNING the real game. It's easy to call a raise of $10,000 when it's play money since if you lose it..really you've lost nothing.

The same issue applies to trading. Ok, so you've demo traded and have had wild success with it..or not.. Big deal. Until you can deal with the real emotions of money, you haven't learned much. You can program, code, optimize all of the systems and indicators in the world, but until you actually put some money behind it...well...it doesn't matter. I guarantee once real money comes in the game, now fear and greed come into play. You will be fearful of losing money so profits are becoming cut wayyy to short and you will be greedy in holding onto losers because you just might make that money back.

If you see your system and say "oooh, hey it works, I would have made $2000 on that trade", it's meaningless, because I guarantee you wouldn't have held it that long regardless of what the indicators are saying..

Long story short>>>>it's easy to go target shooting when the targets don't shoot back at you.....give them a gun, and we'll see who does the running now. It's that simple.

All this is just something to think about. Either way, it doesn't matter to me what you do, live or demo, but just offering friendly advice that's all.
Once you get in the game, only then will you really learn.

The Hun.

I am from Morocco, My name is Aziz,

About 1 years ago I started trading Forex because my one freind also trading already Forex in Fez. First he teach me some.
At that time my English was very very Bad.
I had one small shop in Fez, Morocco. But my Shop not very busy. I also have Internet in shop.

I serch google looking for free trading systems and I download many systems and opened Demo Accounts with some Brokers.

Then I met one site luckytips Dr. Zain Agha and he teach me many things. Give me one system free.

I also have to learn English to understand it better. So I also learn English on Internet for free.

I start Demo trading and make some money so my friend told me open account in Switzerland with his broker.

I start with money, sometime win sometime lose. Not good result. I write to Dr. Zain and he says buy ZTL system. So I buy it and first practice for 1 month demo then start with real money. This make me confident. I start making money, good money every day. After some months I buy another system ZRC. This make me rich. This is very good system.

I sell my shop and trade full time. Now I have one English teacher. He come to my home to teach me every day. My English is very good now.

OK. This is my Success Story. Anybody else write their story. I will be happy to read. Thank You. Aziz

Hey, Mike those who persevere are the ones that get to see success in this business.
I wanted to share with you a letter that I wrote to myself in 2005 (Below). I wrote it after making a big mistake on my demo account. A couple of months later after more than 8 months of demo and a lot of backtest and analysis, I went live. I had been making 5% average per month for more than two years now. The key is to find a system. To find your system, demo different strategies test for no less than 6 months . Also backtest for a couple of years all the strategies. That’ll give you some data to be able to analyze which strategies are worth trading live. A good place to start is to look for breakout strategies on volatile pairs (ex.GBPUSD) and don’t use fix T/P (just my opinion) . There are a couple in this forum and on other forums that really work. Something else to consider is to remember that ALL strategy will have losing periods that could last up to a couple of months. Don’t give up on the strategy that you are testing because a losing period is very valuable data will be usefull when performing your analysis of the stategies. I know this sound like a lot of work but again those who persevere are the ones that get to see success in this business.

To Myself,

Forex is easy, just be PATIENT. Wait for the support and trend line confirmation. Wait for the fibs. Wait for the pivots and THEN WAIT for the price action or candlestick formation. DO NOT trade if you don’t have at least 3 confirmations. DO NOT trade if you don’t have price action or a formation. DO NOT trade less than 30 min bars. The smallest the time frame the more confirmations you’ll need. Wait, wait and then wait again. If you have doubts about a trade then don’t take it. There are going to be more opportunities. You only need two or three good trades a month, so don’t take trades every day. If you didn’t find a good trade in a entire month….then you didn’t loss anything… be happy about that, because that shows outstanding self control, which is the key to success in this business. Keep studying and reading, but most importantly…practice in a demo account. Don’t go live yet! Why do you want to go live anyway? If you cannot do well in a demo you’ll never do well in real life. Do not go live until you have a system. This is not about guessing is about a system. You know what to do, just do it. If you cannot control your emotions, then you shouldn’t be trading. Control your mind and body and you’ll succeed. You are almost there, only you can mess it up. I trust you and I know you can do it. You have always reached your goals, this is just one more. You did well for the last couple of months. You proved is possible. Now is up to you. If you fail is because you wanted to fail, because you know what to do….after all you are writing it up here…Don’t you?, THEN WHY THE HELL DON’T YOU JUST DO IT!!

Very Respectfully,

Yourself

For me, I think that one should have many proven systems or strategies. You should have tried them many times before and have a high percentage of win.

What I mean is that there are many great systems out there. But they do not always work since markets changes behavior. When current system is working poorly, try the other systems by backtesting first and see if which system is more successful for current market. At least this is what I do and it works.

Hi everyone

My name is Rudolf Strydom. I've just turned 19. I have been demo trading for a total of 3 months now. Im using the ava-fx demo trading platform and I like it a lot. I started out about 3 weeks ago on a new demo account of 100 000$ and I have been using a personal version of one of those Einstein theories to trade the market with minimal technical and fundamental analisys... Here is a picure of my last 30 closed positions. The account has grown by 30% in less then a month and this is not the first time I have achieved such success. The only question is when to start live trading because I have already lost quite a sum of my real money!

Happy trading yo'all..

I have spent a boat load of time lurking around this and other forums and am a pretty successful live trader, however it has taken a lot time, dissappointment and real hard earned $ to get here. It is great to demo trade but it is a completely different ball game when you have your own real money on the line, thats when the second guessing begins when you see that trade you just put in sink by 15 pips (if you are trading a standard that is $150 in less than a second (it takes my wife longer than that to spend $150). The bottom line here is that you can make money and be successful with Forex, but you have to put in your time, you really have to be passionate about forex or you will never make money because you will never learn as you are just chasing dollars. My list of key rules.

1. Forex is a business - your business and needs care and feeding the same way a business would
2. There are lots of good trading strategies - you have to pick the one that best suites you. Once you find one follow the rules you develop
3. Manage your account balance very tightly, use those stop losses if you don't you deserve to loose all your money
4. Let the trades come to you.
5. Greed kills - Take the profits and run, or at the very least use trailing stops to protect your profits.

Many of the posts here refer to something I myself experienced in the past. Based on my experience, demo trading will only make any sense if one were to trade it in exactly the same way he/she will eventually trade live. Demoing def. has it's place, but after a while (because it usually eliminates the very real emotions you will encounter trading live) it's best to open a live account with a broker who allows you to trade in units. That way you can trade with as little as $1.

Having done this for a while, with a strategy that suits your personality, you can gradually increase account and lot sizes.

This is extremely helpful in developing good equity management skills as well.
All I wrote about is exactly what I did, and now I'm making 300-500 pips per month.

All The Best!

I agree with FXdarling

Real trading can't compare to demo trading, of course demo trading helps one to paper trade his or her theories, or test it on the market.

On the other hand, putting some money on the table to trade adds a different dimension to the game.

1 problem most new traders face is that every trade to them must be a winning trade.

Well I had +96 and -48 today.. nett 48 pips. and thats it, i'm tired, cut the trade and heading to bed.

The other problem is a small account, whenever you have a small account, you start to scalp or news trade, and putting tight stop losses, its good discipline to do stop losses but then again, it doesn't make sense to pup a SL 15pips away on cable when the daily range is normally abt 100 to 150 pips easy.

starting with a good size account IMHO is important.

learning to control fear is another crucial aspect. I trade with the mentality that i can lose away my account, that way, i don't get emotional when i trade.

its been a tough journey for myself too, but then, everyone's learning.
