I have noticed that a very large number of posters here come out of the EU. I am from Texas. I would like to know your opinions of the long term viability of the Euro and of the EU in general. Right now, I don't see how it can survive. Will smaller countries in the EU accept German economic control?

From here in the US it looks like Germany runs things for you guys. But I am starting this thread because I want to know the truth from people on the ground there.

Can the Euro survive?

Yes, Germany runs things. Yes, the Euro can survive (ups and downs of course). Germany will make sure it survives. Yes, now it's a good time to sell it in my humble opinion too.

Well Germany and France are quite strong players in the EU, yes. However, if you're in the UK, you're largely out of their control. I think some countries will need to leave the EU, but it will survive in some form for a long time. So the currency will survive for a long time. I think people in the US should be more worried about their own situation, which from where I sit (UK), seems worse. Japan also seems to have some problems with debt.

As long as we have the petrodollar, which is backed by the full faith and credit of the US military, we have no real issues. At least not yet. If we do, you can rest assured that we will be spreading democracy to wherever the problem lies. And the UK will help us too.

As far as EU goes, I find it ironic that after two world wars, Germany got what it always wanted anyways.....control of Europe.

I was wondering if people that live on the continent are okay with this.

History tells us that people fail to appreciate the effect of compounding. So yes, maybe not in trouble yet, but that time is approaching at an exponential rate, and the US is not prepared for it.

I think there is some anger at Germany, but equally, and often missed by most, is that there is anger in Germany at the rest of europe. The germans are having to pay to finance debts. That means German workers are paying taxes, part of which goes to helping out other countries. They may or may not get that money back. As you can imagine, German workers are not necessariyl so happy about this.

Some are, some aren't. I'd say most aren't. That doesn't really matter either. That's the beauty of representative democracy... You get to vote for some politician that will approve in your name what you disapprove.

If Gemany is resentful of Europe, and Europe is resentful of Germany, how do think the EU can hold itself together? For example, Germany has made it pretty clear that they have no interest in penalizing Russia for it's involvement in Ukraine. If Ukraine splits and falls into civil war, EU border countries will want something done.

I can see the Euro falling hard and fast over these developing scenarios.

Ultimately, I was comparing ALL of Germany's attempts to control Europe. There was no Nazi's during the first world war. Germany has been trying to consolidate Europe for 100 years, and it finally got it's way through economic control.

You may a bit young to be solid on history, however, so it's no big deal.
