Hi anybody,

Just to make sure what I believe is right, please anybody read this before I hardwire it into my brain. All imput welcome, the more outrages the better, newbees and gurus.

The Counter Impulse Wave:
The Counter Impulse Wave is the most damaging to most traders’ books due to its sudden change in direction and volatility. It requires the trader to make quick decision, usually to cut his losses and square his positions. There is very little time to think due to the unexpected changed in direction of the market which requires implementing new strategy - flipping.

But it is also a great opportunity if caught near the beginning and immediately initiate aggressive attack to ride it.
This is the most profitable strategy in this method of trading because you’ll be riding the trend near the beginning. But if you’re slow and stubborn and waiting to be proven right refusing to cut losses, you could end up with the biggest loss or even margin call.

This is important to me 'cause I find it difficult to cut losses....but if I can mold my mindset to think I am doing it for potentially the greatest ride of my life, then the small loss is well worth it.

Guys, what do you think, right, wrong or need changes?

This may be true, but most can not identify it, even if it bites them in the face. Most traders do not look at positioning of MT's all together..............

may i draw your attention to fti's first post and this extract.

What many traders do not know, or may fail to recognise, is that your success in taming the markets, is comprised of a mix of ingredients. Not so unlike in baking cakes.
I suggest three very important ingredients. One is " Market Structure ", the other is "YOU", then Capitalisation. Of course there are many more components, for the moment these seems of dominant importance, in my humble opinion.

Thanks so very much for the imput. I'll go back and reread the Market Structure. The video from Alien explains it very clearly. I'll keep reviewing Market Structure just to make sure I get it right. Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me and I go off tangent.

Hi Fti,

Don't forget to soak in the sea water at least 15 to 30 mins each time. The minerals (magnesium) in the salt water will relax your muscles, especially the heart.

The video on "market structure" has a very simple explanation and some similarity to Fti's explaination of counter impulse wave, quote:

"If it was when we are at rescue mode or attack mode, then a little discomfort is likely, this is the MO. When a counter impulse wave hits, the move are very swift, sharp and directional, normally against our position.

If such was in our position I call it windfall profit and I initiate profitaking procedures to regroup for a strong skew attack later. .

If such was to my detrement, I call it a @#$% position and I take out the last attack size from the market at a loss, and allow the remaining positions to "bleed".

I then would go back to the charts to check if the impulse is "contained" within the scope of the trend. Normally it would have killed the short chart trend and indicated reversal. It would be good to see if this was so , in the hourly charts.

Then I scan through the other short charts up to the hourly to find the point where the impulse is not reversal to continue a level up rescue, if it exist.

Otherwise, if the hourly chart is impacted the next rescue is 1 level up from the last cut loss size and RESCUE IS IN THE DIRECTION OF THE IMPULSE , this means that the open positions are reversed, as the bleeding stops and built into position as the volatility wanes, normally in such instances, the retraces would hardly be 30 % normally 10%. So the reversal is executed in stages swiftly as the bleeding slows and as soon as the next wave is "felt", the rescue "last+1 level up" is pumped into the market to rescue.

Please be aware that this protocol could expose your book up to 30% in the process. therefore do not overstay the rescue. Bring it back to below 10% as soon as the impulse wave slows off , in volitility. Although, the impulse will continue in lesser volitility, it is unwise to carry high exposures, cut back to a smaller spiral , that you may have possibility to mount another attack, if and when it comes, without spiralling the book to oblivion. This is risk management and it is used to supress the "scorpion" ie greed.".... End of quote.

The title itself of the video "market structure" may be a bit confusing, because in Fti's teaching of Market Structure means what it says...is the proper defination.

I would name the video: Trading the counter impulse wave.

I may still be wrong. That few words from Fti for trading the counter impulse wave have taken me years to really understand and hope be able to trade prudently.

More input welcome...for the sake of learning.

I'm a trader from India.. i'm trading in NSE NIFTY futures since two years.. as every unfortunate novice trader lost my fortune( Close to 7500$ when converted).. struggling with 66% draw down.. stopped trading since..
i will start to trade again after i thoroughly read and assimilate your teachings..
I also have some doubts, (as i trade in stock futures where volumes and open interest are available at EOD) will post them after making some progress in your teachings.. Hope you would'nt mind..

My friend to me this is my basic understanding of impulse/counter impulse waves, in your previous post it seemed to me as though you were talking about targeting these bigger waves, in my experience it is very hard and frustrating to do this and what is the driving force behind such targeting?? Greed or fear of missing out??, the reason I posted an extract from fti’s opening post was not just to highlight purely ‘market structure’ the other mix of ingredients are just as important, the knowledge of understanding ‘market structure’ is the area (tool) that we can find our many different opportunities within, when a move/pattern starts to emerge and I see an opportunity to trade arise be it with or against the current move, I do not know how big this move will be or even if it will follow through, impulse waves can come out of the blue they are not always the first and biggest move especially during these times of manipulation where these are sometimes reversed very quickly, my understanding is that we should attempt to read the ‘market structure’ during ‘normal market conditions’ (whatever that is these days) and try to get whatever the market is willing to give without any expectations, if we are lucky enough to be on the right side of a big counter impulse move then understand this was a profit of windfall luck (not something you can see and pick out all the time). I use (try to) the ‘market structure’ to find many opportunities within a move, to do this you need to be aware that a move/pulse flows through the time frames and their structure, the market is not confined to our definition of time it will take as long or short a period to complete its move as it wants to, BUT I have found the time frames if used correctly with the understanding of the structure (not an easy task) can give us an idea of how the move is progressing and present further opportunities, it is a very hard thing to try to explain, that is why market experience/screen time is so important, also there is not as much out there about ‘market structure’ to help really understand the opportunities it can present, it may be that because it is not a defined ‘do this here at an a b c thing’ that it is so hard to explain, there is some stuff on how to plot it though (like alien posted) and the rest comes from your own experience I guess.


Trading a possible counter (be it impulse or not) wave (however big or small) is just one way of many to spot an opportunity to trade and to try to take what the market is willing to give within the ‘market structure’. all that is important is the health of your book no matter where the pips come from.


This is just my view from where I am at in my learning curve and I am not the best at explaining things sometimes, so please do not take it as I am telling you ‘ this is how it is done’, it is just what I have found is working for me so far.

You have help lift the fog in my brain. Thanks for your time to explain. It's amazing a little tweak here and there helps clear things up. Also I find the relationship between time frames and the fractal patterns took me a long time to grasp leave alone trying to explain in writing, and even if I thought I understood, may take time to acquire the skill to trade profitably incoporating position sizing, risk management and overcoming the problem in "you". Like you said "hard and frustrating".

Greed, I have no problem, but the fear of loosing yes. Fear of loosing a small amount of money, but ending up loosing a bigger amount, due reluctant to cut loss. I know Fti has said this many times, and why I believe the counter impulse or impulse wave (big waves) on 5 minutes or latest M15 chart is where I should take the loss or flip my position if my position is against the flow. Like you said how are we to know the wave is going to be an impulse or counter impulse. This is where I will have to dance with the market to feel it's pulse and wait for it to show her hands, and not fall into the traps and get slaughter like pigs/ducks.

I only hope I have helped in a positive way, this is just part of my curve I am also working my way through on my journey, one thing you said at the end of your post about traps/pigs/ducks, again this is just my interpretation of what is written here within this great thread, in my view these are very different animals with very different habitats both in the real world and as far as the market is concerned….

Pigs… get comfortable within their surroundings and eat all the feed that is freely given eventually ending in their being trapped and their demise. The market is forever changing, change with it, Familiarity breeds contempt.

Ducks…get shot down while in flight. The market often displays false flags, never chase a move it may be already over (pump and rest), there is always another trade.

Every battle plan should include an escape strategy, I know you have been at this for a while now as have I, I have found the market structure combined with what else is written here should enable you to devise a plan for most outcomes, (Minimising loses and collecting pips) the hardest part is having the balls to stick to what you see not what your emotions are telling you to do. Money is just another tool.
