Heh, back in the day we used to sit in wooden benches at the Exchange and watch a man come update the stock prices on a blackboard every 15 minutes. From this we would do mental arithmetic to update the pivot levels which we calculated every morning (without calculators, heh!).

We had to keep a mental tab (this is before the pen and paper was invented) of the hourly prices to go update our bar charts on semi-log canvas at home with oil paint (no pens, remember?)

If a buy or sell signal was evident we'd telegraph this to the broker - which created a lot of trans-Atlantic cable congestion on the days when we'd read in the newspaper whatever stupidness the Fed had gotten up to next.

It was mental but a lot of fun, especially the time when one of the guys drew a pair of boobs on the blackboard - none of us could concentrate on our trading until the man came and updated the M15s!

from experience i'd say a window in front of you.

why? Altho' your monitors are your "windows" into the market, your eyes take massive strain focussing up close all day. A view will allow you to shift focus periodically as well as give a sense of space (and beauty?) which is good for psychology. Have a wall to your side where you can stick notes, charts and a whiteboard. If there is no wall nearby (?) then put a whiteboard on a stand to your side.

The eye strain is not really noticeable until some years, so it's a good idea to save your vision for when you're older and doing more important things than trading

This one comes from an options trader based on the island of Mauritius... The trader writes, '...I keep everything simple, I trade plain price action, no indicators, no news, with experience I have come to learn that only price pays and nothing else. On the picture, you can see on the wall memos all related to trading, i.e: past mistakes, goals, rules, wisdom. The goal here is to reproduce sound behaviors and eliminate those that don't serve me well.'

Yea... I see some trendlines, moving averages and heiken ashi candles and the right side has tons of oscillators..

I'd go one stage further and suggest (IMHO) that retail strats should be good enough to work off a smartphone and if they can't they're trading all wrong.

Yes and no, I've an eyefinity set up at home, 3, 21" monitors, i7, 12 gb ram and for all my various work at home it makes it stress free and less tiring but I hardly use it. No doubt charting is better etc. whilst I'm working on other stuff as the charts spread on two monitors, but for the vast majority of retail traders you're right a laptop or tablet is enough, and for retail strats a test of its effectiveness should be can it work from a smartphone, there's no need for retail traders to trade hunched over a desk for day after day.

nice article, lol! most of the traders have too many screens to keep an eye on, this is private trading not an institution. I have one screen with a small window showing 2 currency pairs, 4 stock indices, 2 commodities (gold and oil) and 5 stock prices. for interest:

1. the S&P usually makes a v-bottom around an hour or two after London close.
2. the S&P usually makes little change between London close and London open the next day (unless there is a Fed announcement overnight).
3. High tide lifts all boats during the London session (including S&P and Dow Futures)
4. one little known stock index has been smashing the S&P to pieces for several months.
