The day has nearly arrived, next Monday i'm off to South East Asia for a six month trip. Thought I'd get this up today before my broadband is disconnected!

It's been good to see some posting around here lately, (even if it was just pres78!) i've been busy getting ready for the trip so I haven't had a lot of time to contribute. I enjoyed contributing at the start of the year when it was a little busier, these things move in waves, hopefully it picks up again around here soon.

Regardless, this'll be the last post from me this year as i'm taking some time away from trading whilst travelling.

I think the problem most of us have with VSA is we forget to see the forest for the trees. Not seeing the bigger picture, which is understandable because it can become daunting.

EJ is a hard read, but you can see that the volume on the lows has been higher than the volume at the tops. This is a good indication that buying is occurring and then confirmed as the trend changes. Now if you look at the up bar on 6/19, it does look as if there is a lot of supply coming in, but this is more than likely absorption, we have two tops this bar is possibly effort to push through and out of the accumulation period.

I must admit, I'm a tress guy.


I'm an intraday trend trader trading for points not ticks. I don't need to look at more than 2 time frames and I certainly don't need to know what is happening on the daily or weekly time frame to take a trade on the 3 minute chart. I think the problem most people have with VSA is they are trying to catch tops and bottoms rather than focusing on the meat in the middle.


Although not limited to VSA, too many traders want to pick the top or bottom instead of letting them pick themselves. Gavin does not help. He talks about the virtues of being contrarian. But you can't be a self proclaimed trend trader and be contrarian at the same time. By definition, contrarians look to buy low and sell high. By definition, trend traders look to buy high and sell higher.

Insightful as always.

After looking at my previous posts and analysing my problems with VSA, I realise I`m not going to get far with out a reliable data feed.

Catch 22: I don't want to spend money until I learn VSA, I`m not going to learn VSA with out spending money.

If anyone can recommend a free chart package with decent feed it would be appreciated.

Food for thought:


Clearly each individual has to find his or her own way to trading success. What works for one person does not neccessariyl work for another. But here is a profound and basic truth from my second favorite book on trading:


"In a way, the most interesting principle that Isaac Newton pointed out is that bodies have inertia; that is, that they tend to keep doing whatever it is they're already doing, unless some force acts to change them.


If a body is at rest, it tends to stay at rest. If a body is moving, it tends to keep moving-in the same direction and with the same velocity that it already has.


Einstein referred to this as 'laziness'. That is, a body tends to do the laziest thing possible- and the laziest thing possible is to continue to do whatever it's already doing. Making a change of any kind, either in direction or velocity, is far less lazy, and therefore not done, unless the curvature of space-time, what Newton would refer to as 'force'-comples it to do so.


The market is exactly the same. It tends to keep doing whatever it's already doing. If it's going up with a certain velocity it will tend to keep doing that unless some force (buying or selling pressure) causes it to accelerate or decelerate. The same thing if it is going down. The same if it's doing nothing.


Therefore, if you want to know what the most likely thing is that a market will do in the future, take a look at what it's doing right now." Welles Wilder, The Adam Theory of Markets, pgs 56-57.


And as Tom Williams stated on page 50 of Master the Markets, " We have indicated already that if you are going to become a good trader, which then leads to making money in the (stock) market, you must trade with the concensus of professional opinion and not against it. This means that once a move is in progress you must be able to identify the underlying trend in price movement and go with the flow".


One last passage from The Adam Theory of Markets:


" A trader is like a hobo in Kansas City who wants to catch a train to the west coast. Would he catch a train going east to New York or Florida and hope that it would reverse? Of course not. He'd catch a train going west.


And what's the best way for the hobo to know that the train is going west? When it is already going that way.....


To repeat: The best evidence a hobo has that a train is going to go west is that it's already doing so. Actually, it's the only evidence that really matters. He can have all kinds of theories about trains, but the bottom line is: Which way is it moving?" pg. 53-54.

One last thing on the subject.


Gavin had a great line in one of his last couple of webinars. He said, "I trade to make money not to get fit". This was in response to somebody that remarked that swiming against the tide makes a person fitter than swiming with it.


This made me think of this concept:


Adult salmon swim up stream (against the tide). And ultimatley they are swimmint to thier death. Salmon eggs, float down stream (with the tide). And ultimately they transform into new life. Things that make you go HMMM...........

Current take on GU. I've been trading this more than EU because it's been moving better lately. There was plenty of Market top and Trend Change action the last two weeks or so, so I'll just say the BG prior to this chart is weak. If you disagree, ignore this chart.

Hello everyone, firstly may I say thank you to all contributors of this excellent & very in depth thread.

I am just getting to grips with VSA & I have been using the "VSA signals v1.02" indicator posted by f451 in post#19,193.

I was wondering if anyone knows how it would be possible to write all of the VSA signals from previous bars to a .csv file? I have tried using the FileWrite function by dropping the following code in. However I just cannot get it to display the previous signals for each relevant bar. I know the problem lies in the last parameter of the Filewrite function, which I have here as "DetermineSignal(I)", but have tried many other options.

This is for the purpose of analysis & backtesting. I can do the number crunching much better/quicker in excel.

VSA isn't about a single bar... so I give you three!

1.) High volume up bar - SMs pushing it up?
2.) Low volume up bar - Real intention of SM is maybe not up..
3.) Nice big up bar with extremely low - No support from SMs. Retailers are jumping on long.

It was a rather nice trade. Risked about 10 pips, closed for 58 pips. Reason? 4HR bar ending soon. Expecting a small retrace. Will be looking for re-entry.
