In NLP this is called anchoring. Very effective way to control your emotions. I suggest that any trader who hasn't already taken the time out to learn and apply the technique do it. Most important thing is that we need to study and understand ourselves even more than we understand the markets.

You think your hypnotist can help me to go to bed early with her hypnosis? That's my biggest addiction so far. Even when I want to go to bed early, my mind tells me to stay up. And as a result, even though my trading strategy is not bad but I am never able to execute it well because I wake up very tired in the morning because I went to bed so late the night before.

Have you tried no caffeine after 6pm?
Dim the lights around 10pm?
5mins of deep breathing and stretching around 11pm?
Then just keep telling yourself you are tired and need to go to bed - it will be like self-hypnosis.

If I can do that, I can just go to bed at around 11:00 pm.

Thanks for your help but I need something stronger. Somebody needs to rewire my subconscious mind which for some reason is trying to "protect" me by making me to stay awake.

OK one last try before your subconscious takes you over.

Caffeine is also in tea, coke, chocolate, some sports drinks and probably many more things.

If that doesn't help have you looked into 4hrx4hr sleeping patterns? Saw something recently on this, before electric lights many Western civilisations had two equal sleeps per night. They woke around 3am for an hour and got up went for a walk and even chatted with neighbours. Sleeping in smaller blocks may help, not necessarily 4hrs but worth trying some different techniques.

Try a combination of things. Health is not a black or white thing. Every single thing you do during the day has consequences that pile up at night time. Melatonin works depending on dosage and depending on how fast it wears out on you. For some people it actually is counter productive and wakes them up earlier than it should. That happens to me sometimes. Some people are just stress driven, meaning that their normal, stable cortisol levels are chronically higher than they should and that would not only keep you awake but also makes your sleep less restful. Here are a couple of tips. Try them, combine them and see what works for you.

- Take calming teas. Kaba tea is good for the day because it won't make you sleepy. Chamomile tea or any other "bedtime time" tea would help you relax
- Take a couple of short slow walks during the day. 15 min should be enough
- Root out gluten from your diet. Read my lips.. no human being can actually digest gluten completely and this can lead to a host of issues. Not enough time to write them all
- Cut back carbs close to night time
- Increase protein intake from whole foods and/or powders
- Take a ZMA (Zinc/Magnesium) supplement. Make sure whichever one you pick does not have melatonin (since doesn't work for you) because some do.
- And off course, the chief king and only miracle cure known to man. EXERCISE!! 20 min, 3 times a week and make sure to include weight training.
Please pull my head out of my ass, I am running out of oxygen...

I don't drink tea, coke or any sports drink and I don't eat chocolate either. I have cut out caffeine completely from my life. What you mentioned about this 4x4 sleep pattern is interesting because I do wake up at around 3:00 am if I wake up during the middle of the night. Instead of talking to my neighbours, I just go to the bathroom though and then go back to my bed and stay awake for another 1 hour and fall back to sleep. (Don't think my neighbours would appreciate it when I knock on their doors at 3:00 am in the morning. ) And on the days that I stay up the night, I stay up until at around 3:00 am and then finally I feel tired enough to go to bed.

I will do more readings about this sleep pattern. Thanks

Usually, before i trade i either head to the gym for some power lifting or go for a run.

It gets me into the zone to trade properly.

Interesting article. I never know that. But this article says that if you have only slept about 4 to 5 hours by the time when you wake up at 3:00 am, you are supposed to turn over and go back to sleep. So no, no knocking on neighbours and they should be happy to know that i won't be engaging in petty crimes either.

side note; I know people in their nineties who've consumed copious amounts
of coffee for most/all of their adult life and continue to function very well,
(considering the age).


IMHO, caffeine can be beneficial. DNA is more important.

Sure if you really wanted, but from reading some of your posts I don't think staying up late is your addiction, trading is obviously a very large part of your life, you're even ready to move countries for your passion! That's the kind of obsession and dedication that drives success I believe. I used to be the same (staying up late back testing, forward testing, thinking, reading), and no it's not exactly HEALTHY in keeping with the thread topic.

It's not such a bad thing though for your strengthening your trading and I think one day you will gradually find the balance you desire, without any external help.. They say admitting it is the first step If you can learn to refrain from trading when you know you're not 100% right, and simply wait until you are then you are already a large way ahead of the pack imo.

I agree....and the more frustrated you become, the less chance of sleeping.....it's a vicious circle! It's very rare that that happens to me, generally I sleep like a baby, but when I find that I can't sleep yet I know that I must be tired, I get up. I go to the kitchen and repeat my usual 'pre go to bed routine' which is supper and a coffee. So I make some toast, have a coffee, read a page of the newspaper and go back to bed as if I was going to bed for the first time....works for me

Why walking is the best exercise. Consider some of the wealthiest people you've known
or read about. Do they all look like bodybuilders or do some them seem like they could
have taken an hour or two each day to walk in solitude and get their thoughts together.

I make sure to expend enough energy through the day with physical activity so I can get good solid 8 hours rest at night.

Aw you are so sweet. Yeah I LOVE Singapore!! It will be perfect for my lifestyle. In case if I stay up late for the NA market, I can sleep in the next day and still catch the Euro/*NA market. But since I am now in NA, I have to get this sleep problem resolved. I did start to go to bed late because I had to research and work on my trading strategy and testing it in different market environment and since I am in NA, I have to stay up really late to observe the European market. Now this habit stuck with me. Now I am just not able to go to bed early anymore.

It sounds like your cortisol cycle is off, cortisol should peak at 8am then decline for the rest of the day until it is low enough to make you sleepy around 10pm. If you don't go to bed around that time though by about 11pm your adrenals will start pumping out more cortisol to keep you awake. Cortisol is basically a stress hormone but a less potent one than adrenalin, it keeps you awake and alert. Once you have been doing this for a while your body starts to get exhausted from all the extra stress hormones. Low cortisol in the morning and then high at night is symptomatic of stress.
