Ever wish you can hop on to another broker's MT4 demo without having to download it from their site and reinstall it? Well, here's the answer, with some demo server files you can use.

Background
Meta Trader 4 reads parameters in from a file located in the "config" directory. Essentially, you can take a server file for any broker, put it into your directory, and be able to create a demo account with that broker.

What to do
1. You need to get the .srv file for a particular broker. I'm hoping that folks on the forum will post their SRV files on this thread. I'll kick it off in the next post.
2. Save the .srv file to your Meta Trader 4 / config directory. You'll probably see others there already.
3. Launch MT 4.
4. Open a new account. On the second step of opening a new account, the new server(s) should show up in the list (see screenshot). Select the appropriate server.
5. MT4 has a problem where a chart that gets opened only works with the server under which it was opened. So, if you have some charts up based on your IBFX demo, then switch to your Alpari account, you'll need to open new charts. I solve this problem by creating different profiles for different servers.

This only works with the brokers who are set up for MT4 right? I mean COES or FXsol would not work... Is that correct? thanks scott

Stockwet,

Great idea to post these servers on the forum. I've always kept 4 or more demo servers for each copy of MT running. As far as charts created under different servers I have not had very much trouble. It may depend on how many unusual charts like USDX and Silver you open or the type of indicators or experts running on those charts. Under history there is separate storage for each server. You can erase history for any chart from any server with out losing the indicators or objects on the chart. It just reloads the erased history. I get rid of spikes that way. Try the history erase on a real small scale in case I've just been lucky. I install a re-named copy of MT to a different directory that I use for stocks, metals, USDX and other exotic pairs because most servers don't carry those items in their feeds.

Enclosed are servers for Alpari, MetaQuotes and 2 different MoneyTecs.

I was reading through this and I see eslewhere that a poster was wondering about using matatrader and trading on xpresstrade account /platform?

I was thinking about using metatrader for my charting package/analysis and entering the trades on xpresstrade ? Using them separately?

Will this work out practicality wise??

I have attached the server config file for Forex LTD. Their feed includes USDX and news.

I have two questions regarding MT4

1) Has anyone run two instances of MT4 (from separate directories) with two different server feeds at the same time on the same PC? Any data problems or port problems? Is this doable?

2) Has anyone found a common sense trendline drawer expert/custom indicator for MT4? This is for automatically drawing support & resistance lines between significant highs and lows that form triangles and other breakout patterns. This is not the Tom DeMark trendline drawer that is widely available.

Please advise and thanks so much,

Frank

AT,

I'm sure a number of people do that. For me, I'm not sure it's practical. I use a breakout strategy and if I have a data feed for my charts different from the datafeed I'm trading off of, I can run into some early entry problems. Otherwise, I don't think it's a problem.

Frank,

I just tested running two instances of MT4 with two different feeds at the same time. It was just a preliminary test. I'll try it out in a bit more depth tomorrow with my experts, but, everything seems to work. I have a version of MT4 from MetaQuotes.net I already had installed. I then downloaded and installed MT4 from the StrategyBuilderfx.com site. I launched both and they both seemed to work.

For your problem 2, I'd open that question up on another thread. It will not get looked at on this thread by the people who could answer it best.

Regards,

stockwet

Stockwet;

Attached is the FXDD server file. Have you seen a common sense trend line (CSTL) auto drawing indicator for MT4? I am still searching for this indicator.

All the best,

Frank

I'm adding server files for FXDD. fjlpop already added the server file for the demo. I'm including the live server also, just in case anyone needs that.
