USD/CAD: Loonie Fell On Disappointing Employment And Housing Dat

In Canada, employment fell by 21,900 in January, compared to a downwardly revised rise of 31,200 in the previous month. Market had expected the economy to add 5,000 jobs in January. Also, full time employment change decreased by 20.60K jobs in January, compared to a rise of 41.20K jobs recorded in December. However, the unemployment rate slipped to 7.0% in January from 7.1% in the previous month. European stocks were mostly lower at the opening on Monday ahead of Europe`s finance ministers meeting and the first G-20 Meeting in Moscow later this bank week, while most Asian markets were closed for holidays.

Stock markets in Europe are likely to remain relatively quiet due to public holidays across the Asia-Pacific region. Chinese and Japanese stock markets were among those closed Monday for the Lunar New Year holiday.

As of 03:17 EST, Stoxx Europe 600 traded lower by 0.38% to 286.25.

Light Trading Session Ahead Brussels Meeting

The bank week started with a light trading session, as the Asian equity markets were closed due to Lunar New Year. The activity was limited, and the volumes remained low. In Australia, the monthly home loans decreased by 1.5%, worse-than-expected (vs. -0.7% in last months reading). The Australian S&P/ASX200 lost 0.24%, yet continues to trade at its highest levels since April 2010. AUD slipped under 1.03 against USD for the first time since October 2012.

The US stock futures gained despite low trading volumes. Gold and Silver were little changed. WTI Crude and Brent oil futures dipped slightly in Asia, yet the encouraging data out of China limited losses.

JPY traded low volumes overnight as the only major trading pole was Sydney. JPY remained in a tight range of 92.36-88. Despite the Japanese FinMin Aso’s comments on JPY depreciating too fast, USJPY and EURJPY remained well supported by standing buy orders mostly from the Japanese clients. Friday’s EURJPY sell-off weighed on EURUSD, bringing the quote down to its lowest level since January 24th...
