Can anyone recommend a good charting service or charting trading package. I like CQG, but they are too expensive for me at this time. Does anyone know of anything out there on the level of CQG?

Look into Trade Station. Apparently if you open an account with them and trade something like 20 lots per month, they'll let you use the software for free.
I can't vouche for it, since I've not used it. By most accounts its pretty good.

Intellicharts by FXtrek is another option. I have used this and its not bad.

Try MetaTrader. It is free and has a load of features. There are custom indicators and experts available too. The data feeds are free with demo accounts. Alpari has a very good feed.

I like the CMS VT chart package. Features a Dysneyland of indicator choices with folks adding to them all the time. YOu can either go free unlimited on their demo or for a minimum of $ 300 of trading capital on their live server.

Is there any charting service free or otherwise that will make a noise or other alert when an indicator gets above/below a certain number (for example, momentum above .10, etc)?

Most standalone charting packages allow you to set audible & email/SMS alerts.
I found alertfx.com but it does not do obscure indicators like momentum, WilliamsR, CCI, ATR, etc. Does Meta trader do this?

I use SierraCharts. www.sierrachart.com

The software plus Forex data feed costs me about $50 mo.

What broker do you use because no matter what charting software you use, it's not going to help you unless your feed comes from your broker. If you use FXCM then I would recommend Xtick. They are fairly cheap and easy to use. Netdania also has an FXCM feed and they are free. Many traders I know use TradeStation but it is really expensive. If you have any more questions about anything or need more explanation feel free to email me.

I've been unable to find a TSF Indicator in VT charts. Do you know if there is such a thing there?

The TSF (or Moving Linear Regression Indicator, or Regression Oscillator, or Linear Regression Line). The TSF as in Xtick is very satisfactory. [It is not a regression channel].

There are several regression tools on the interface and alternatively on the toolbar at the bottom of the chart. Click on the Large White Arrow and the same list as the interface will pop up.

If this is not what you want then try these two sources:

These are two support forums. There you can see if the tool you want has been constructed by someone. Then you can download it into VT chart tool cache. If the tool has not been constructed you can ask for it. Very often a kind person will actually make a tool for you.

Chris at VT did point me to a download (Linear Regression MA) which works fine.
Why not try Interbank FX - Great free platform with their demo & Live accounts.... You can also see your trades on the charts!. I also use Tradestation - lots of bells & whistles!.

Can somebody document the process of setting a price alert using metatrader.
I've searched the documentation and can not find it.
It would be greatly appreciated.

This can be done in VT, any indicator custom or built-in .Whatever indicator you would like .

I use MT3/4 and VT, they are FREE and they are good.

However, MT4 I find much better becuase of the ability to do manual backtesting. With Mt4 you have the ability to go back in time and test your systems.

In VT, I found that you can only go back in time a set amout of bars. I think its like 500 or something.

I contacted VT(cms) about this, to find out if I can change it.
They said that I do not have the ability to view past history...

How I am thinking... How can you trade with a broker (cms) without any past price action history to go by.

But hey, I will continue using the Demo for VTs Sound Price Alerts.



If anyone knows infact a way to go way back in bars, share please.

Actually it's 5,000 bars. 5,000 minutes or 5,000 weeks {If the pair has that much history} With the intent to raise it yet again to 20,000 in a later release.

Set "Currency Price History Length (# of bars)" anywhere from 100 to 5,000.
This is a little bit infuriating. I dig this thread out which has not been posted in in 7 MONTHS to ask a question, and the question is NOT being answered, and people are now posting about information that was talked about 7+ months ago, which was a completely dead thread before I asked my question.

Guys, this was a dead thread. Nobody cares.

Now to the only relevant topic.

Does anyone know and be willing to share the information on how to set a sound alert in meta?

I should of just started a new thread.
