That's assuming every trader started in his 20s.

But if I was to weigh up the time that I spent learning (and still learning) this game and had spent that time working a 1st, 2nd and 3rd job (which I did when I was younger), I would have been a lot further around the world working the three jobs than trying to trade my way to riches on a $5,000 account. Did you know my middle name was "keeping it real"?
I just think you're vastly underestimating the difficulty of leisurely travel for a lot of young professionals in today's economic environment. We (generally speaking, of course) all have student loan debt. Because of the housing market, we both can't afford houses and rents are sky high. Gas/food/inflation is taking up bigger portions of our income while our wages go nowhere.

You couldn't work three jobs today. That's the thing. Unless you're talking working three minimum wage jobs, which at even 80 hours a week (mind you those are 16 hour days, every day), after taxes, will put you somewhere in the $25k department... factor in rent, living expenses, gas/public transport, loans, and you're probably not saving enough to travel to your local pub, let alone abroad.

Perhaps your focus was on those posters who are clear and succinct with their posts ...the guys who don't have the time to chat or waffle. They only have the time to post what they have recorded for their own use... but nonetheless find the time to post those records because their trading performance improves via an interractive environment. Certainly, the posters that i have learned from and continue to learn from are well into their thirties, forties and fifties. If you follow posters, their mental, emotional and actual age becomes apparent. Perhaps your friend only spent a few hours researching before commenting. I would suggest a minimum of 1K hours before any assessment. BTW...beware of posters who claim years of trading experience or years of FF.com experience...
Only by spending hours upon hours of studying a posters trading knowledge, whether tech. or fundie can you truly assess the extent of their knowledge and therefore the hours of knowledge that they possess.
On that note, i believe that it takes a good amount of life experience to take on board the level of disciple required to learn and trade sucessfully and consistently into profit.
There are some 40 yr. olds on ff.com who do not, imo, posess the emotional maturity to ever become useful members of this trading community. There are others who tickle my brain cells into becoming one.

i am probably one of the oldest here lol but i look a lot younger. i am a pro trader and so are my friends and they too are oldish. They dont visit FF and i only do so for a laugh. I personally think many young people here are looking for the holy grail which doesnt exist and of course they'll talk the talk but in reality they dont actually know how the forex market works. Anyway as for the vote i am oldish.

i keep him hungry... when he senses me steadying myself for entry ( yeah alright, getting excited) he jumps on the keys and turns his but on the screen...mind you, i have taught him to clean up afterwards...

I think it will be more interesting result if this poll is only voted by those that have been trading for more than 3 years. We will then know what are the age range of successful traders.

Excellent reply.,...but... how would we be able to define between the successful traders and the egoist wannabees? Only through hours of observation .
I would like to add that in treading these halls i have met only three traders that i can say, within reason ,are in their 20's... Orbital,frankyn and BBking. Rare and genuine young men.
The poll result , as stands, looks to be a landslide for wannabies in their twenties, rather than folk who work their buts off ( whatever their age) learning through interractive trading and therefore helping others.

46 yrs old and have been doing it on / off 6 years with relative success,until i started using the dollar index with my euro/usd trade also switching to futures

No, I'm not. I've had a flick around the internet to see how things compare to when I was flitting around the place. Not a huge difference.

You can work three jobs ... one full-time, two part-time. Or you could work two full-time jobs. Just as an example you could do a graveyard shift from midnight to 8.00 am followed by a day job from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm. All that is required is keyboard skills, half a brain and not a lot of sleep.

It's possible to earn around £1,000+ per week just tapping a few keys and it's still possible to get accommodation in London for around £400 per calendar month (some places with bills included). You could be saving £3,000 per month and in three months you have £9,000. A lot of travelling can be done with £9,000 (if done in certain ways). No degree or student loan required to learn how to tap on a keyboard.

But it all comes down to how much you want it.
Nothing worth having is easy.

I think you might be missing the point that if you are working that much where is the time for school.. Let alone taking off for vacation from all three jobs just to travel?? I don't think that amount of work would be worth it to just blow it on a couple weeks vacation after saving for 3 months.. I would rather invest it and let it grow and save towards my future

being 21 myself I find that most of my money even making more than 3k a month was spent on food, gas, phone bills, and other things that dont make it easy to save every dime you make. It also makes it harder when minimum wages aren't being raised in accordance to inflation making it more difficult to make a living (in the US atleast)

On the other hand I think that most of the profitable traders aren't even on forums anymore as they've already learned what they needed to and have moved on.. but this is a great place to learn how to achieve those goals
