I've more of a theoretical bent, and was speaking in general. To own the copyright for a light bulb, is different than having exact knowledge about a light bulb. So I meant it's free to use in any way except to repeat it verbatim or in unfair substance.

Also, in 15th c. English literature, before Shakespeare et al, all people did about copyrights etc. was publish an apology at the beginning of the text. Since then, authors such as Jonathan Swift borrowed heavily from current events and texts to make an original satire.
