As far as I can tell, there's no way to circumvent capital gains as a US citizen. You can file as a trader then move overseas (if you want) so you could still contribute to the Roth IRA via your gains though. I just don't have the capital for this yet.

Thailand is pretty damn awesome... Phuket was great, expensive compared to other places in Thailand though, lots of tourists but it's "cheap cheap"

if you're in phuket you can catch me chillin' here...

My choice would have to be the Costa Del Sol in Spain or Portugal with a view of the coast. I've lived in both places a long time ago but have no idea what they're like now. I love England in the summer but the cold damp winters would be a bummer.

It's rough trading the LO and living in Midwest US. Besides the summers are hot and humid and the winters are cold. My kids all moved west so there's nothing holding me here but I hate the thought of moving.

The thought of trading on my laptop while sitting on a big balcony looking out over the water is a great thought. The health facilities, taxes and language would be a pain. I hear it's very expensive today.

How about starting a Forex trading company in one of those zero tax islands in South East Asia. You'd only be taxed on your personal income in whatever country you reside. Nevada, Delaware and Wyoming are zero tax states. Start an investment consulting company in one of those and charge the first company for your services. Travel the world and write off the expenses.

Turveyd, I know would pick Nevada and then he could hire a secretary from the local brothel and write off the services as a business expense. Look at it this way. The Feds keep screwing us and it cost us money. This way we get screwed and it's free.

RE: Spain - wait, it'll be much cheaper soon.

You can't escape the IRS if you retain your US citizenship and derive income or dividends from your trading company, even if said company is set up in an offshore tax haven. Also, check with your favorite brokers before you go offshore: if you base from a OECD grey- or black-listed tax haven state, then chances are the bigger brokers and banks may not accept the company as a client.

Your offshore company can retain its earnings however and not pay US tax on them and also the company's expenses can overlap with your own as you search for the best beach to trade from. Good Luck.

Idea of waking up at midnight to trade, is not something I look forward to.

Phuket gets my vote. I just spent 2 months in Thailand, one of them on Phuket, down in Rawai.

Just so people don't think Thailand is all bars and strip joints, here's a few photos of my boys and me.

We rented a house and it had an ADSL line. It always seemed to work when we wanted to use it.

No, I took two months off from my normal life. It was great to not do any work at all, just enjoy my family and Thailand. The boys and wife absolutely love the place. As for me, it was my 18th time in the last 13 years. I've spent 8 weeks in the US since 1999. In the same period I've spent 16 months in Thailand. No question which place I prefer.
