(IFR) Asian markets mostly quiet. USD/JPY barriers tipped down at 76.25, 76.00 and in 25-50 tick increments down to 75.00. Large stops tipped sub-76.25, 76.00 and 75.00. Topside optionality seen around 79.00, a heavily traded strike recently ($3-4 yards in one-week positions at this strike) and KOs just above at 79.10. USD/JPY stops above 77.50, 78.00, 78.50 and large above 79.10.

They are talking about vanilla in bold right? 3-4 yards is the total value, not the size of the offers. Offers should be there to defend the KO at 79.10.

Cool, thanks. Does anyone know what happens to stops on EBS or Reuters if the new week gaps. Do they get filled at market or remain unfilled?

that is a strike at 79 with a barrier knockout at 79.10, so this is exotic option structure. yea offers should be there to defend the knockout.

I stumbled upon a book last week called Physco-Cybernetics and read through it. It has some interesting ideas. It talks about (in theory) how our logical mind (our conscious) is not designed to solve problems. It's use is for setting goals (or identifying problems that need to be solved) and gathering information related to the goals for us to think about, or focus on. Our subconscious (through no effort of our conscious) takes all this information (and anything else it thinks might be related from our past experiences) and, if the goal does not conflict with our core belief system, the subconscious will go about providing ideas on how we can accomplish the goal or will attempt to solve the problem and give possible answers.

An interesting read, I wanted to bring it up and see if anyone else had read it or anything else along that subject line. None of my friends are into this sort of thing so thought I would try here. Would love to discuss this with someone.

Sorry for taking us off topic, I don't think it is too far off topic but some may see it differently...

Agree! The book is great. The vid interviews mentioned above are also a must see.

A main concept is to continually keep yourself on target. How can't that be of value in trading, right? That's one of the main problems - drifting around with no self-correction.

a cool one from 4cast

* 24 Aug 11: 17:50 GMT (LDN) - FX NOW! EUR/JPY, USD/JPY Flows - Someone had to buy EUR/JPY and they were forced to pay up!

One can only have sympathy for anyone that is forced to put a trade through the markets in their current state of ultra low liquidity. Summer doldrums and even the fear that Bernanke may do something has contributed to the market's lack of interest. At this late time of the day, a buyer of EUR/JPY tripped stops in the 110.60-65 area and there was nothing to buy until offers appeared at the 111.10-15 area that seems to have capped the market for now. The EUR/JPY sparked a rally in USD/JPY where dealers were anxious to test the defence of options said to be at the 77.00 level. It appears those options gave way without much of a fight, which probably argues they are more the plain vanilla variety rather than any barrier type.

Hey Monroe,

Its been a long time no posting for me I've become an observer until I see DS's book!

Eur/jpy caught my attention. Do you think any manipulation may have been involved? If as 4cast states the markets are in a state of low liquidity do you think that may have been someone looking for those stops as liquidity?

All the best,

James.

I suppose that could be a possibility. Cooler part was what they said about usd/jpy and the test of defense of options.

Talk about intervention effect, BOJ & SNB intervention can create such different impact. I think timing is crucial here, I don’t know why BOJ execute it too early (Aug 01), why not waiting FOMC statement first at Aug 09 just like SNB. As I can see at the chart, from my own view, BOJ execution is not efficient enough changing market sentiment, not enough fundamental thing can help market withdrawing from JPY at Aug 01. Well, for me, that inefficiency interesting enough to be played on.
