MT4 Freezes my laptop

Hello guys,

I have a big problem with MT4 platform. Everytime I try to run in on my laptop it freezes. I have ASUS G51J with Windows 7 64 bit, avast antivirus. It has never run on this because after 1 sec it freezes computer so i must restart it with power button. It does not freeze when I am not connected to the Internet. Does anyone have simmilar problem and can help me? I would be very grateful!!! ps. I have been on many web sites and looked for help but could not find it. Also I tried to install in other path then x86 program files and i tried the newest version of MT4 - nothing worked.

Perhapse the reason is in your 64 bit windows. As I know, there are some troubles with programs with 64. Have you tried to run MT4 on another OS?

Win 7 on 64 bits is known to have a lot of compatibility issues. If you have an originial license you can contact the windows support team and ask them if they can solve the problem.

do you have a firewall program on the laptop? if so my money would be on that being the problem. the fact that mt4 runs when you aren't online tells me you have a firewall issue when it tries to connect when the net is running. it wouldn't surprise me if you are getting a firewall popup OFF screen, or maybe you are getting the UAC window asking to give mt4 permissions at the same time as your firewall popup tries to show and this somehow creates a conflict with the firewall. just taking guess here.

i have win7 64 on my desktop and laptop, and neither have issues with mt4 once you move the mt4 folder outside of program files folder.

I have a year old Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 64 bit OS. I have never had a problem with hanging or response. I have run MT4 demos from 4 different brokers in that time. Used to have response and disconnect problems with my old XP machine. I run a firewall all the time. Do not disable your firewall, unless you are prepared to rebuild your system from the recovery disk.

I have had a few problems with accessing the indicators in the folders using the default setup. I have moved everything to the My Documents folder (where they should be) and those problems are gone.

Edit: I vaguely recall some people were having incompatibility problems with the anti-virus software interfering with a commercial EA which contained a DLL. This would be about a year ago. You should search this forum for "anti-virus". If you haven't removed all your custom indicators and EAs, give that a try.

check your network interface driver...see if there is an update available.

if that doesn't help, try disabling chimney offloading in the NIC driver setup. The driver may be trying for the NIC to do all the work and the NIC may not have the equipment to do so, which would create exactly what you are describing....

thanks for advices. I tried while ago both - updating my driver and disebaling chimney offloading and it didn't work

@Mitserdof - yes I tried on other Windows 64 bit (for exapmle Dell) and there was no problem.
@nubcake - no I have just Avast and Windows firewall. I have tried to run MT4 with my antivirus software disabled and also without Windows firewall and it also froze
I don't think that i get any popup off the screen.

I guess it might be something with this type of laptop.

Get a copy of your or any MT4 demo running on a different machine, one that is hopefully Windows XP - when you install it, install it into the root directory, instead of C:|Program Files|MetaTrader, in other words, install it into C:|MetaTrader. Verify it runs on this machine, and confirm it does not need to be updated - if you are being asked to do an update (ie., to MT4 v401, then do complete it)

Once it is running fine on that machine, network copy that new folder/install over to your Win7 x64 machine, also into the root folder/drive.

Once you double click terminal.exe from the newly copied folder on your Win7 machine, it should run, and the only thing you should need to do is log in with the right password. (the password encrypted file doesn't transfer properly between machines, hence why, for protection, it needs to be reinputted).

This should make it run. There can't be anything possibly to do with the "type of laptop you have." There a couple of things that could be problematic, and this direct copy over should avoid those things.

Try booting into 'safe mode with networking'. (Press F8 repeatedly on startup for the boot options screen). You probably need a wired network connection for that.

If it does not work in safe mode then the problem is probably the network cards drivers. Definately some system software. If it works then you have some other software that may be the culprit.

Others ideas:

 

1. You do not state what version of MT4 you are running. Try an older version. 225 or 226? A clean install without any added indicators, of-course.
2. Delete or rename the file 'liveupdate.exe' so it does not run.
3. Open the task manager and have the list of processes visible when you start MT4. You may be able to see the process that crashes the system. Look for which process is maxed out when the computer becomes unresponsive.

Finally, as a stopgap solution you can try runnig MT4 in a virtual machine. Win7 pro comes with a winXP VM. If you are running a lesser version use VirtualBox, but you need to have a copy of winXP to install in it. Or linux if you can get MT4 up and running in WINE.

Moment ago I run Windows 7 in SAFE MODE with networking, and MT4 worked well !!!! I updated it and everything was fine, then I reboot computer and started in normal mode and it froze again (it was already updated and in C:/MT4)

If it is the graphics card then why would it work without a network connection.

Try seeing if any process goes to 100% when MT4 is started. That should give a clue to which software is misbehaving. Mind you, the computer may crash before the the task manager is updated so the info may not be accurate.

If task manager does not give anything useable, you can try brute force.
Turn off all running programs. Most things on the task bar (icons, bottom right) should be gone. Then run them one by one and see if they interfere with MT4.

You can use msconfig to disable programs set to auto start on startup. It provides their CLI commands so you can start them up manually via the 'Start->Run' menu.

Ok i tried to see processes but the freeze happens quicker than I can see it in process manager.

The Taskmanager window should be set to always ontop. (Options->Always ontop).

Set the sorting order of the processes to show those with the highest load on top. (Click the CPU Title twice).

If that does not help then you'll have to try disabling all running programs.

If that fails you can move on to reviewing which services are running. Also available via msconfig. Look through the running services and try to identify any that may be connected to networking. Disable them and restart. Keep track of what you do so you can restore the settings.

YEAAAA finally i have found what cause freezing !!!!!

I have updated my sound card.
Before it was: asus Realtek Audio Driver 6.0.1.5928
Now it is: Biostar G31M+ Ver. 6.x Realtek Audio Driver 6.0.1.6299 for Vista, Win7

Three and a half years on it was still helpful.

I have the same laptop as the OP with exactly the same symptoms. I found it hard to believe that it could be the sound driver. I thought something else must have changed while the sound driver was updated.But when I realised that my sound driver was the same version as the OP's I thought there might be some truth after all.

In any case, my driver has been updated to a more recent version and MT4 works fine!

Uninstall, hard delete mt4 from your system, and install cTrader

Been there too, thankfully made the above choice. No more problems

I think that you should unistall mt4 and after you configure your computer and you must eliminate your cookies or data about it.

After you can install again and you can work with mt4 very well
