I think something just got covered up, or there was a universal bad tick. It very clearly dumped 10% in the last minute of trading. Then immediately after close, it went back up 11%.

This was all PRIOR to APPL release, so that cannot be it. I'll be waiting to see a report on this. I doubt very much that both esignal and yahoo got it wrong, unless they are somehow linked.
I can't see the spike on any feeds I use but wouldn't surprise me. Did you know we have been running at almost a flash crash per day since the original? The guys on zero hedge track them.

Flash crash in the SPY is alarming, speaks volumes about volumes...

It is correct, the market is doomed. How the SPY can flash crash is beyond me.

As for the trades in the SPY, Bloomberg had this to say:

NYSE Software Glitch Spurs $7.9 Billion Misprice in S&P 500 ETF

Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Regulators can add a faulty software
update at NYSE Euronext’s electronic Arca stock market to the
list of mishaps that have weighed on investor confidence.

A system upgrade at Arca triggered what appeared to be a
9.6 percent plunge yesterday in an exchange-traded fund that
tracks the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, a drop that would have
erased $7.9 billion from one of the most popular securities in
the U.S. Data published by the electronic venue at 4:15 p.m. New
York time showed the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust at $106.46, compared
with its opening level of $117.74.

The prices were later voided and the closing price updated
to $118.54, up 0.7 percent, exchange officials said.

“Something went wrong, the question is why,” said James
Angel, a finance professor at Georgetown University in
Washington. “For them to cancel the trades is probably causing
heartburn in back offices across the country.”

The glitch in the fund with a market value of more than $80
billion comes as federal regulators are trying to prove U.S.
exchanges still work after the May 6 crash that erased $862
billion of share value in 20 minutes. Data showing the decline
appeared just as Apple Inc. and International Business Machines
Corp. were releasing quarterly profit statements.

The apparent plunge in price involved 7.2 million shares in
the closing auction on NYSE Arca, according to data compiled by
Bloomberg. The S&P 500 rose 0.7 percent to 1,184.71 yesterday.

Thanks for these posts. I have to state again the total lack of worth that this kind of trading serves. Seriously, it's nothing short of either A) pickpocketing, or B) gambling.

While I am not one to say that all trading should go back to the days of open pit, and that all orders should be "Buy and Hold", but someone has to draw the line somewhere.

Even though it would suck, take the futures markets for example. If you had to take delivery of a commodity, it would put an end to speculation for the most part. Of course, our friend Kulu wouldn't be able to make his killing in the Euro or Oil markets, but that's a different argument!

The real culprit here are the exchanges who look the other way. Why? Because they get all that commission for trading, and the more trades executed, the more money the exchange makes.

I've only watched Episode 1(so far) but this is fantastic Chris.

Anyway, always interesting to see these statistics... Everyone else seems to be right around 25-30% success rate each quarter.

They stand out quite a bit from the crowd huh. Not at all unexpected from my point of view for exactly the same reasons as those you mention Infinity.

Oh, another interesting thing to notice is the change in number of accounts with the brokers.

Seems like Oanda is doing very well in spite of not having shipped their customers off to the UK like several others did (and are now regretting...)

The one nice thing about Oanda is that through all the regulatory changes, they really haven't had to do anything, because the methodologies they employed were already in line, before the new specs came out.

They had never allowed hedging (in the same account)
Max leverage has always been 50:1
And the FIFO thing was easy to skirt around.

All in all, in the last several years, while other brokers were moving clients and restructuring their operating systems to accomodate the new rules, Oanda just sent us an email, saying "everything's pretty much the same as it ever was".

The reduced leverage on exotics is the first time something has actually changed, and kinda sucks, but otherwise, Oanda rocks.

To be honest, the 20-1 leverage bullshit is the only thing that bothers me. 50-1 is still decent enough. Interactive Brokers only offers 50-1 as well, so I have been used to it for a while.

Nice trade CW. I'm also short EURJPY and I like the way it's behaving so far.

Low, concerning "hedging" in the same account, I never really understood that. Why isn't hedging the same as just squaring the position (i.e. buying an offsetting position to your original position?) Or is the difference between hedging and squaring the fact that with a hedge you can decide on the position size, so that it doesn't necessarily has to be equal to the original position size?
In this sense, hedging would have one distinct disadvantage compared to squaring, namely that you continue to pay interest swaps. Brokers tend to take some margin on that (i.e. you receive less for going long/short than you pay when you're short/long.)
