No, what they do to me is more heavy handed than stop hunting: they just glitch up the platform to the extent that it becomes hard to trade.

I don't think of it as paranoia. I just think it's always prudent to be safe with your money regardless of whether broker is out to get you or not. I do believe that they have their tricks though. With that said you can play games with them also if you have multiple/sub accounts. You can put orders in opposite directions and move the stops around to bait it to the others take profit. It's tricks like those that's usually get them to resort to messing with the platform as The Fool eluded to. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm just starting to think they don't want me scalping. That's how I was growing my account and I didn't start out with a very large balance. I'm guessing they didn't really care then but now that my account has gotten bigger it's starting to annoy them. Might have to change up my strategy and trade larger time frames.

Of course bucket shops don't want traders to scalp as its hard to counter the party in time.

Awesome, you've never told us what timeframe you primarily trade? I personally believe that bit of info can tell us what going wrong with your stops.

I usually use 1H, 30M and 5M time frames to draw out my charts and look for nice confluence. I use 1M for entries when price reaches these areas. I usually play the bounce off these areas for 5-10 pips which was very reliable when I was trading smaller. I was using higher leverage so these 5-10 pips would give nice returns. My stops would usually be around 2 pips. Like I said, when I was trading smaller lot sizes I would be able to knock these trades out all day. Stops would only get hit around 25% of the time and usually when they got hit it was a clear break of the support/resistance level and price would continue to move past. I've been scaling up my position size as my account has grown and using the same strategy it seems like stops are being hit 60-70% of the time now. Price breaks through the levels on my charts just high enough to take out my stops and then proceeds to bounce back as I had originally anticipated it would. I'm just not along for the ride.

Hey awesome, 2pip stops are crazy in this market man. You apparently had something that was working and now it's not. Best advice is to try and get with a tier 2 PB broker (a prime of a prime) who offers an institutional ECN platform such as fxtrades CNX, don't waste your time with viking CNX bullshit like FXDD and the likes offer as their "institutional" platform. You can get this for about 20k now, where it used to be 50k minimum deposit. You really need that type of broker with a scalping strategy like this, as you'll be getting amazing execution and you will be seeing true interbank pricing.

if you can't do that, maybe this is an idea...

Don't go in high leverage on the first trade, go in smaller and give yourself more room, once it goes against you to where your stop 'would be', add in more or wait for it to turn around and then add more in... in other words, build your position. If you were going in 30:1 for instance for 5-10 pips, split your position up to 3 10:1 positions.

If that doesn't work, then it's obviously your strategy was never a good one.

Your broker is not targeting your stops personally unless it is a f'n hack shop. they may target aggregate stops if they can in certain situations depending on the model... maybe if they can pop 1-2 ticks at most although I have seen pictures of some really shady shit, these were obviously hardcore buckets, and most likely out of business. I trade with Oanda and I don't see anything crazy happening, just the regular f'ed up forex crap pulled by dealers and major players which is why I love this market!

like fool said, if I was still doing tight scalping like that, the only thing I would be worried about is if they glitched my feed... so I also suggest you get another feed to look at, something neutral like prorealtime.com... see if they are seriously messing with you, and if they are, you can show them there mess up and they will most likely tell you it was a server problem or whatever and take it back, if not, get the hell out of there.

Thanks man, I appreciate the advice. I was actually looking at interactive brokers as I've heard good things about them. Just not sure about their trading platform. Downloaded a demo of it and it was a cluttered mess. You're right though. Whatever the reason may be doesn't really matter I guess. What was working doesn't seem to be working anymore so I'm going to have to change things up.

no problem, btw, I know some people scalping with IB they are fine, only thing I don't like is there commission rates for that style... but it's doable.

it's not glitching the feed, its just gumming up the platform so it does not work. Certain essential functions do not work, platform "freezes" during trading, etc.

Try laying up a $100/pip trade in a scalping strategy with a huge "out-of-range" stop that you intend to move then all of a sudden the platform is unresponsive or goes offline completely. Bucket broker can automate that too...

well right then and there, you should be saying to yourself... "well they don't like this style of trading here apparently". the second something like that happens is the second you should be moving your capital elsewhere.

furthermore, scalping 1M size with a bucketshop is not the brightest idea, because that would imply you have enough cash for a broker and platform that wouldn't be acting like that with an additional plus of much better pricing.

You're not helping me Monroe, but that's ok. Fact is I trade alot of different styles. What they really don't like is to see that result in consistent outsized returns. Spot forex is a casino, nothing more. If you beat the house for too long somebody will be there to break your thumbs.

I am not trying to help you Fool, I was just saying, you would have to be dumb to trade like that with a bucketshop, especially with that size, as it makes no sense.

Retail forex is like a casino, so if you have the money, you skip retail altogether is what I am saying and that won't happen.

Banks don't care if you make money, they care if you are arbing them if it is way to quick for them to offset it.

Now guys if you come to the conclusion that retail forex is a casino, I don't understand all that uproar when someone says they're gambelling and prices move mostly randomly. And bucket shop brokers... this word describes them well.

spekitox... like a casino meaning they don't like it when you are consistently winning, taking money from them, "the house", they will do things to change that.

It really depends on the broker and the model. I was referring to them messing with the platform to make you lose. Nothing to do with randomness in price movement and the act of gambling or not gambling.

Trading spot forex on an interbank level on an institutional platform is different. Unless you are stealing from them, like with quick arbs... then a bank can and will shut your line down if you're not anonymous. They have last look on most platforms, and if they see you're being a little weizel, they don't like it, and they don't have to take the other side if it's not in their interest. EBS on the other hand, they can't ID you, but you need to be with a PB. All in all, you still have to know the game.

the retail forex broker, that is different, in reality you are not really trading on the interbank spot market or it's true pricing.

Hi all,

IMHO, I have been trading for some time (maybe 5 years), the last 2 in forex, and I also thought that my stops were hit intentionally. But, thinking about it in a cool way I finally wondered 'will my broker really move the market to achieve my 3 or 4 dollars by hitting my stop? 'Or even when I risk 40 dollars?'

I do not think so. So I reviewed my plan, and checked my strategies, and found my mistakes.

BTW, I never use the broker's charts. I use an independent data provider. That's why I know that it is not the broker intentional movement.

Not if they only move it to trigger stops. Even if you did place smaller trade with stop and then place larger trade in opposite direction when the move price to trigger stop, you would have to know when they are stop hunting and when they aren't. Prices usually differ by a pip or two between brokers so it's difficult to tell when they are moving price and when the aren't. In addition, I'm not saying my broker is hunting me down. Just looking for information. It's always good to know what you're up against.

There are two good places to be.
#1 is small enough that your broker doesn't care.
#2 is large enough that your broker has difficulty trading against you.

In between, just be more careful.

I don't know whether there is a bit of paranoia going on here. Given that 95% of retail traders lose (apparently), then the retail broker is making $$$$ hand over fist anyway. What kind of money are we talking about here? I wouldn't have thought that the retail broker would be bothered about someone unless they had smacked them for at least 50K. Anyone want to give me an idea of what kind of money they made before their platform started running their stops or glitching up?
