Actually that is exactly what repainting is, but I can see that your definition is very strong so I am not going to start a discussion about who are right and who are wrong.

Furthermore I would recommend you to just play around with that TMA tester in strategy tester a little bit, if you did you would see that the movement is not "very small", it is "very big" to say the least.

My intention were/is not to critisize anything about you or anything discussed in this thread.
I think it is very unfortunate that you took it this way, since all I did was responding to you request for more inputs on the TMA indicator.

The information I provided is real and highly relevant for anyone that is going to implement it. If you or anyone else choose to see it as irrelevant or that the provider did not know what he was doing then that is your call. I can assure you however, that was not the case.

Sorry but repainting is not the normal updating an indicator does. The reason they are called moving averages is because they move. The constant movement or updating is not repainting. Some indicators update every pip in their math formulas, some every bar, some daily, some weekly but they all update. That is not repainting. As price goes up the indicator will indicate that is what price is doing by moving up. If price moves down the indicator will move down. If price stays flat the indicator goes flat. That is not repainting, that is updating its information based on price action. Those who use pivot lines change their lines every day. That is not repainting. Those who use Fib lines change whenever price goes to a new high or low. That is not repainting. Indicators, based on whatever math formula and time frame they use to update their lines, arrows, bars, etc etc. That is not repainting that is just giving you the newest information. So then what is repainting.

If an indicator gives a signal and then removes the signal and then restores the signal. That is repainting. This often happens with certain kinds of MA cross signals like MA crosses, sto crosses, MACD crosses, etc. They will cross and then price changes direction and then uncross and then cross again as price moves up and down. This constant change in giving signals is what repainting is. It repaints the previous signal that it had removed earlier. That is why MA cross EAs look great on a chart but dont work in real time. They are constantly crossing and uncross with price action (the exception are ones based on medians) The TMA does not do that. It is just lines spaced on the screen based on a median. In fact median indicators are the most solid and reliable indicators because they dont repaint or move all over the place. You need newer highs and newer lows to get them to move. You will see that in pratically all my EAs. I use a median indicator at some part of the formula in practicaly all my trade decisions. That is why I am beginning to recognize the TMA as a good indicator. It is a nice smooth move across the screen based on the median of several different indicators.

You are using a 4H time frame. To move lines on a 4H TF takes a lot of movement in price action. It takes weeks for the TMA to move from the top of the screen to the bottom. That makes it very consistant and reliable indicator but the one thing it does not do is repaint. That is a misnomer and a misunderstanding of the term.

Thanks for the thorough explanation Bob. It's just one of these terms that people throw around when they don't like a particular indicator.

I got back on the trading horse Monday a week ago and it was a great week, good profit and little drawdown trading the NB5 system. Today the market is not really moving with that US holiday so I'll see what tomorrow brings.

I too have become a TMA fan since introduced on this thread.
Visual testing over 20 pairs on a 4H non-renko "regular" chart over the last week has shown the most promise of anything i've come across in years of part-time forex-ing.

ENTRY: Bar touches the outer band (ATR multiplier 2.0) followed by a 1 ma median crossing a 1 ma median shift 1 (Bob's idea in a PM).
[Or another option: Bar touches the outer band followed by a Linear Regression_Indicator_Line (4) turning in the direction of the trade.]

EXIT: TP middle band (or MPTM settings).

S/L: Use Bob's recovery - although it appears from visual testing the only recovery level ever needed is L2.

Anybody up for an EA (2 indicators being 2 too many for this guy ) ?

Seems like we have lost our coders, but I can maybe throw something together.

I have visually backtested using the simulator on a few pairs over the last 10 months. 2.0 will get you into a lot of trouble with certain pairs. Especially this last run and May and I think it was feb/march as I don't recall now.

You probably don't want to use a multiplier and just put your SL in.

Using price as the item to break the TMA, I have found 2.5 and 3.0 to be 'decent' and 3.0 is the safest, but sometimes you will not get an entry for like 3 weeks! 2.0 you get the most, but will have the most losses.

The trick is deciding if it is price that breaks the TMA, a 1MA, 2MA etc...

I think you will find price breaking a 3.0 is probably the same as a 1MA breaking the 2.0 or something similar.

Any volunteers who are better coders to put something together?

It usually takes me a full day to do something like that.

Oh, on my visual backtests using simulator with a 100SL, 30 go to be with jumping stop, it was profitable, but you will have to increase your lot sizing drastically to actually make any money in a month.

Pips will be significantly less than the 5.0 system, but so will DD and bad months.

DuffyPratt has a good concept in using a trend following routine with it and I think that would be interesting to add! But, before it gets overcomplicated.

What happens when you plant MCKeen's on that?

Remember that the TMA moves drastically!

Renko should really be little different than a regular Price chart except cleaner and the calculation will most likely take more history into figure out.

Also, how much time has passed on those entries etc.. If it takes 3 months to get a trade, then you will have to put a lot of weight behind it!

For the sake of clarity, here's 4 EU 4HR charts that include the recent move up (August 16 – today). Notes:

 

  1. the yellow entry arrows are approximate using an entry parameter of 1x1 (gold x silver) or Linear Reg turn (magenta)
  2. there are a few overlap trades between the four charts
  3. exit is TMA mid-line
  4. every trade is a winner
  5. no NB recovery was required (assuming L2 at 200 pips)
  6. this of course presupposes that the TMA did not move substantially, which currently is up for debate on this thread - but visual backtesting last week agrees with Bob that they don’t move much

Penny for your thoughts, a dime for an EA!

Ok, here is the penny. It changes/updates position so the entries will always look amazingly good.

Not so in real life. Download the LFH simulator, turn it on and run through since 1/1/2010 and you will find that it is not nearly so perfect. You still will have a lot of losers.

If the indi didn't shift, then yes, this would be the most perfect! haha...

Oh, and I was editing Steve's EA, but honestly, I am burned out on making EA's at the moment. they all seem so good, then you backtest them and they are shite. haha...

Using the TMA for historical purposes is useless. You really have to go back to the strategy tester and test on a forward going basis. If you do this for these charts, you will find more entries. Not only that, but the entries will simply be different. Ones that you have marked would actually have been missed.

As price moves the recent bands get pulled in the direction of the move. Thus, after the fact, the charts are much more likely to show an entry at a top or a bottom, which is perfect for a counter-trend system. But in real time, the same entry point either won't occur at all, or it will likely occur at a different point.

I backtested 10 years on the USDJPY using preformed charts. The results were extraordinary, and I was already buying my Maserati. Then I checked two years using strategy tester on a forward going basis. The results were still good, but only about 1/3 as good as with the back test on charts already drawn. The difference is that big.

YEAH someone understands! the signal is only valid at the time the indicator shows it. A week from now is irrelevant. Besides once you get a signal to trade you then turn on your EA and let it enter. If you use the MPTM at 20 +5 all you need is at the MA cross for price to go 20 pips and you cant lose on the trade. I am working on the TP section now with this indicator and with the added lines I am using will give you solid TP choices. I also will have a manual trading section with warning indicators for those who dont want to use the EAs. If the testing continues to go well I will be able to still trade ten cents lots with 1,000 dollars with a USA broker. I will be limited to a max of 8-10 trades at once though and probably wont multi level the trade. I may go one extra level if I need but probably wont. If a trade doesnt develop in 3 or 4 candles you close it out and look for another entry point. 24 hours should be a max on holding on a trade that goes nowhere and unlimited if it goes into profit. So this whole TMA argument is useless, it doesnt go anywhere in a 24 hour period.

50 - 100 pip stop should be plenty. Increasing lot maybe possible but I want to see how trading the new leverage works. A penny is 4.00 margin, a dime is 40 dollars margin and a dollar is 400 dollars margin. If you dont multi level you could do one - one dollar lot trade safely dimes about 10 lots.etc. I probably will start at two or three cents and get a feel of the new system.

The breakout EA is just breaking even and not going anywhere. I think it will be a very good news breakout ea but nothing more. You can use it at big news story times but that would be all.

I had 9 winning trades with no losers yesterday. I had one loser but that was because I put the wrong EA on. I will have a filter added on so if you do that it wont enter. All 9 trades went 30+ pips but I let them run and 6 came back to the +5. The jump activated so two hit +45 but they both went over 60+ pips first. One trade did 28 pips and hit my new TP EA. I will see how that one works more today. The one thing that I will be adding is a visual on whether to let trades run or not. Once you see the visual you will understand how that works. If you already have a demo if it goes below both the MA lines just let it run. I will have an EA set up that will close the trade when it crosses back over the farthest line. I may also test going to the 1H or 30M chart for your close. Probably get more pips that way. Wish I had a whole day to work on it but have to do it in pieces for now.

Yah, you are doing a lot.

I was coming up with the same, either 100 pips stop or last high of 5 bars, whichever is lesser.

You know, combining the buy/sell EA into one wouldn't be hard at all! I don't see why this whole concept couldn't be automated and just turn it off if you didn't feel comfortable or around NEWS.
