Has anyone had any luck running MT4 on Darwine for Mac? I have MT4 running great on my Linux machine using Wine. It will run under Darwine, but some of the icons and button descriptions at the top do not display....
I'm on MacOSX 10.5.7 and a Darwine build from 1.1.21. I'm not great with computers... so please describe well the technical stuff.

I realise this thread is old but I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I am having with vmware fusion.

MT4 runs fine but after it has been left running for a while the feed always stops. It still shows it has a connection but in order to get it running again i have to re login or restart mt4.

Its a real shame.. as I cant use any EA's to move my stops ect.

Hope someone has a solution.
I've just installed parallels and windows 7 on my mac and it works beautifully with no noticeable loss of speed. It was very easy to install and the only downside is the fact that you need to pay for parallels and probably windows too. Actually one more thing, the battery lasts half as long when windows is open. Still 3 hours + though

Unfortunately moving metatrader on to my new macbook pro coincides with a bad loosing run. Doh

Cost? You're trading forex - who cares. It's a business expense ;-)
well... for now.. im using bootcamp to create windows.. simple and efficient and FREE... hehehe.. im still waiting mt4 in .dmg files... its more fun trading with mac... I think... if someone can create mt4 in .dmg files.... plz let me know... PLZZZZZZ....

Ask Metaquotes. They are the only ones who can solve this problem.

It really makes me wonder why commercial companies today are still unable to create cross platform applications while every hobby programmer and every open source project can easily do this, even without any expensive commercial tools or any additional effort . Just look at projects like Firefox or OpenOffice and also smaller ones like mplayer or VLC and thousands of other programs, free or commercial ones, some of them run on almost everything that has a processor built in.

Cross platform toolkits are available, most of them are free, most of them make it really hard to write something that is NOT portable, where is the problem, metaquotes, where is the problem?

For real strategies i use a vps
It's a loosing fight IMO. I did it for years, Virtual PC(what a %$&#), WINE, Parallels, VMWare. All require workarounds and performance issues that are a pain in the ass.

I have found the best way to run windows on mac is to rent a VPS running W2K Server and control that using the Mac Cocoa app Microsoft Remote Desktop. This is the most stable, functional, resource efficient app, microsoft has ever written! It is fantastic(don't get too exited though, it does still crash plenty). There is absolutely no difference between running my VPS on my mac vs running a pc right here in my living room.

I'm using it right now, have been for about 4 months. Safari in the foreground, RDC in the back with my trading platform in a window(or fullscreen or secondary monitor). My CPU is only using about 10% of it's resources(not 100%+) Sweet.

Plus you have the benefit of 100% uptime, can access/administer from anywhere, don't have to worry about residential internet connection issues(router reboot) and if you are out of the house you can fix/reboot etc. without having to go home. For me this is a far better option (for $60 a month) than buying a windows box to set up at home, or than running a virtualized windows enviroment.

I have several macs. With the VPS, I can access my trading platform from all of them(from anywhere) or any machine I install RDC on. and it's just like I'm sitting in front of that machine.

If you want iOS device access to this machine, get LogMeIn Ignition for $20. It is really good. Their desktop sharing browser plug is great too, but I think that RDC wins for controlling a windows machine. I have a client that has a mac and I use logmein to control her machine all the time. It is way better than Apple's screen sharing, which I think is garbage.
Why make things so complicated. Just max out the memory in your mac and use bootcamp - works better than any virtualization software because it is running windows on a intel processor. The only downside is you have to choose to boot in windows or mac - no side by side os's. But when your trading you just need one anyway... oh yeah bootcamp comes with every mac, you just need to own a windows license.

It's actually not complicated at all(in comparison to getting boot camp to run with all it's hoops). The reality is I don't try to run windows on mac. I just control windows from mac. For me, there is no such thing as a dual boot machine. I don't have any desire to boot my mac into windows. That turns it into a windows box ONLY. And in reality, at that point, you are not really running windows on a mac because you have lost all the functionality of the Mac OS(which is why we even have macs in the first place). You are running Windows on Apple hardware.

I live my life in the Mac OS and just deal with Windows when I need to trade. The VPS/RDC combo allows me to do that in a far more organic, seamless way than booting into windows when I want to trade.

I had considered turning my mac into just a boot camp machine for trading, but I weighed out the advantages of the VPS solution and for me they are greater than what I can have with a machine at my home, regardless of OS. And the performance I get out of the VPS is far better than my little mac mini could do in windows boot.
For anybody reading this thread, I thought I'd come back to say that I've since abandoned the VPS stance because I had a problem finding one that maintained acceptable ping rates and internet quality.

What I did, was went back to VMWare Fusion and changed from an Mac Mini to an 24" iMac with 4GB ram and SSD. Problem solved. This runs windows perfectly. With the SSD, everything is so fast. After you use it, you think every HD based computer is BROKEN! :-)
After giving this another go this evening, I FINALLY got MT4 to launch on my mac. I followed Bill's directions to the letter and it's as good as gold. Thanks Bill!!

I have one EA running on it without any problem on 3 platforms running at the same time. All functions are available, though I haven't tested Strategy Tester yet but I believe that won't be any problem either. To add EA's, Indicators or Templates you just have to right click on the application and Show Package Contents and the rest you know how to do it the same way you used to do it.

Have you tried inserting up/down arrow objects?

These are but a couple of issues that are currently listed on the wine site for MT4 and that I've run into (and reported) in the past. Although I haven't tried recently.

For serious EA coding, I currently only trust working on Windows for MT4. I'm using Fusion and Windows 7 with MT4 and don't have any freeze issues. I have 4GB of RAM which maybe is the difference.

I haven't tried that yet but if that is the case for time based functions one just has to take into consideration the time difference, do the math and write the code accordingly and that will solve the problem.

I have 6 mac machines running at home with 4 GB of RAM too and every time I need to use Windows with Parallels or Fusion it's a pain in the butt. Luckily MT4 is no longer part of my need to use Windows. I only have 2 more Windows programs that make me go back but I'm working on it to convert it to Mac. It's just a matter of time.

I am another looking to migrate across to using a Mac. For me, it will mainly be for the travel aspect. I may eventually look at actually running apps natively on my Mac, but for now am happy to just run Win 7 on the Mac for my trading. If Metatrader is ever native for Mac, then I may completely move.

I do have a few indicators I use that are not MT4 native, so I am hoping things will work as normal with them.

When you run it in Win 7 under Mac, do you find everything performs as per normal, billworld? If not, what are the quirks?

What would be a minimum you think necessary to run it properly - RAM, CPU etc? I just hadn't decided whether it would be a Macbook Air or Pro. The Air only has 4Gb RAM, whereas the Pro can go up to 8Gb. Either way I will go with a SSD. I'd certainly prefer an Air, but if 4Gb is bordering on the low side, I'd be happier to go a Pro.

Any help gladly accepted, as I need to get it up and running soon.
