Details in that Philly report don’t confirm the headline pop… the employment component fell to -14.3 from -12.9 while new orders slipped to 3.3 from 4.2 the prior month. Meanwhile, prices paid rose to 14.9 from 10.0 even as prices received plunged to -10.6 from -1.5 – suggesting major margin compression and pressure on profits. For those expecting inventory re-stocking to bring the US economy out of recession, they will find no solace in this report as inventories fell to -18.1 from 0.3 prior. The market is likely caught long on "risk" here and the potential for a sharp drop in equities and for a better bid US dollar is non-trivial.
