Sorry guys but I have to disagree. Are trying to get a capitalist system and corporations (based on greed) to be fair on health issues? Good luck but I can't see it happening. They will always put profit first.

I have private health cover and I understand the conditions. It would be the same in the US but I am paying about £100 per month for my family of 5 and that hasn't changed for a long time. I am self employed also but I always use the public system because it is quick and just as good.

I have no worries about health cover and know I can get whatever care I need when I need it. You would probably be better following the Australian system where you pay extra taxes if you don't have private cover but are still covered. It's my understanding that the US pays twice as much for health cover than we do in the UK.

I probably shouldn't mention this but have you watched Michael Moore's "Sicko"?

I understand the alure of free healthcare. Most Americans who are in favor of government controlled healthcare believe it will be free to all but the wealthy. It will not be free. Most believe that the quality of healthcare will be the same under government control. It can't be, because the government will try to reduce the total cost (from 17% of gdp to 10% of gdp, per Obama's own words), increase the number of those covered by the system, while not increasing the number of providers. The underlings of Obama have floated a 25% VAT tax in the US to pay for healthcare, in addition to the existing tax code. Government controlled insurance will eventually kill private insurance, and in time, all medical providers will be under the control of the government, making government wages. Such a system may be desirable in some countries, but not here. All this to cover about 8 million uninsured.

Our democratic friends tell us that the government can run healthcare for less money than private business, and they point to the low overhead required to run Medicare. They don't seem to understand that this low overhead contributes to billions of dollars in funds being stolen each year (tens of billions).

I could go on, but no need to do so. I think government control of anything is UnAmerican, and must to resisted at all costs.

Apologies for going off the topic of American healthcare but would someone who got hold of a copy of Scientific Interpretation of Bar Charts, mind telling me if it is worth ordering over the internet? Thanks for any help anyone can give.

It's not an easy book to absorb but since fti recommended it, I would say it's worth having. You'll just get a bunch of photocopied pages bound into a folder and not in book form.

Exactly what I was thinking. America is made of those that strive to do better, to succeed...immigrants die to get here with the belief that their efforts can create a better tomorrow for them and their families...taking goverment handouts goes against all that made this country great.

Not really...I do not have to...the man is a sicko...Even hearing his name makes almost to puke...Marxist political propaganda...I know the hell of Cuba very well because I was born in that area...I tell you a secret: if Cuba is so wonderful, how come people risk their lives to escape that pit?

Those that want to understand what is going on in the world today, might want to read 1984 by George Orwell. They might be surprised.

Of course not. I am not American so I really can't relate to the arguements here even though they sound unusual to me. Both Australia and the UK have public health systems and I don't consider either of them socialist. They are public health systems, they work and they are not "socialist" (as related to communist). This "socialist" view, as far as I'm concerned, is just scare mongering by the private health insurance lobby. They are the ones to lose on this and they will spread as many untruths as they can.

I don't really have to worry about health cover as I have a choice to either use the public or private system here so I'll just leave it for you guys to debate.

OK, thanks Zoran. I was just about to order it from Traders Press and noticed they have an electronic delivery option. I am wondering if it will apply to this paper though...would save myself 30 dollars and a bit of a wait if it does.

Yes, that's why I said I probably shouldn't mention it. Michael Moore doesn't seem to be popular with any person from the US I've spoken to but he seems to be popular in Europe. He is not saying Cuba is great but the health system there is very good and I would tend to agree with him.

I read 1984 at high school and it was compulsory reading. Did you know George Orwell worked for the BBC and was referring to activities there also? I mean, which nation is almost constantly at war, uses doublespeak and has a whole lot of Orwellian attributes?

I didn't realise it can be delivered electronically. I'd probably choose that option although I assume you'll need to read the book a few times and actively use the knowlegde for a while before it all sinks in.

I was also wondering whether there is anyone on this thread who is either still grappling with The Art of War and would be interested in swapping notes / ideas, or anyone who has already covered it and wouldn't mind having a look through my thoughts on how it applies to trading and letting me know if I am on the right track?

I realise that this was covered a long time ago but I joined the thread a bit late and would really appreciate the opportunity of talking to somebody about it. I am thinking it is a bit of a big ask as most people are very busy but just in case someone wants to or doesn't mind, I thought I would ask...

Or do the more experienced posters think that if I re-read the notes in this thread, I should be able to sort it out myself?

Yes, we view public healthcare as socialist. Medicare is a mistake that will go bust in a few years. Our history is to not trust concentration of government, central power. If it did not bother us, we would never have fought the Revolutionary War, and would still be part of England. Consider TARP, TALP, unsustainable deficits, taking over GM, cap and trade (don't even get me started about man-made global warming), card check, and now government healthcare. The level of anger in the US is increasing very rapidly, and in time will become a serious problem if it goes unchecked. By the way, 85% of Americans are happy with their healthcare right now, so the Dems have a big uphill battle in front of them. Public opinion polls show that this takeove is very unpopular, and if it goes through, the next two election cycles will see a huge change in balance of power in the US.
