windy...can get very cold...volcanic origin and very young geologically...and as an extra - according to some half of Gran Canaria could collapse into the Atlantic Ocean with catastrophic results....amongst others...Super Tsunamis's which would basically wipe out the Eastern Coast of North America...

But are the Tenerife discos on a par with Ibiza's?

Visited Seattle in July, I parked the car at one of the private parking lots in downtown (apx. 10 minute walk to Space Needle). Not a big problem if you know where to find them.

I live in Amsterdam and have been thinking of going to California for 3 months (max stay without a visa) during the winter time. It's better for me to stay a Dutch resident due to 0% tax on financial markets trading. But it gets horribly cold during the winter here (humid and hard wind) so SoCal would suit me more.

Only concern of California would be the difficult time zone. London session would be in Cali time from 12AM to 9 AM. A possibility would be to take a nab after that to 4PM or so. Can anyone from the California timezone advice on this?

Housing seems no problem at all, lots of rooms and appartments for rent on Craigslist. Probably they won't rent out a full apartment for just 3 months so a room would be more likely.

haha I was just joking with FXSurfer about Seattle. Seattle is great but the traffic does suck. My solution is I just take the ferries from the west sound where I live and use the busses & taxis when I'm in the city.

We are in the same time zone as California (Pacific) and yes this is an issue re: schedule. I try to trade every open but the NY open (5AM) is a b$tch after trading for a couple hours at the LO (typically midnight to 2AM here).

San Diego is a great place to visit & would be nice in the wintertime. I have not lived there but I know the real estate market has been very depressed there so maybe that means there are short-term rental deals available? Maybe some CA people will guide you on that.

Personally, I am looking for somewhere much warmer, more sedate, cheaper, and in a better time zone for trading.

I'm not kidding though...the Pacific NW is really a nice place to live. I've lived all around the US, and several countries in Europe and Asia.

If I had to choose a "best" place to live from where I've been there is no question whatsoever - Singapore is it.

I'm near Vancouver, Washington, and although I have lots of reasons I am learning to trade Forex, getting away from the gray and drizzly winter skies is definitely one of them!

late Tokyo/Europe & NY session is approximately 12pm (lunch) to 12 midnight. u definitely will not mess up with your body clock/sleep cycle. (let's not forget about our health)

central timezone which means u can trade the london and the us session. Cosmopolitan city, cheap cars. Most importantly no taxes on ur incomes!!!

I agree, the UAE is one of the best time zones for trading FX. You can hit the late Asian session, all of the London session with ease, and the first half of the US session without any major interruptions to a normal sleep pattern. It's true there aren't any income taxes here, but the government is getting very savvy on how to collect money from the people by introducing lots of fees and fines.

The housing situation has gotten completely out of control over the past few years. People are buying houses and flats that are grossly over-priced. Nothing in this country, and I mean nothing, not even the Burj Al Arab is built to western standards. All construction is very poor and slipshod and nothing will last. Many have spent huge amounts on villas that are going to be unlivable in 15 years.

On top of that, the UAE is facing a huge energy and water problem right now. The northern emirates don't have enough power and water. In fact, Sharjah (next to Dubai and where many people live if they work in Dubai) has been having power outages all summer. 40% of the countries factories are in Sharjah and they have been losing power. Hundreds of thousands of residents have been without power for stretches up to 5 days. It's hitting 110-120 F everyday with very high humidity along the coast. And no power for AC. The UAE has the most dire water situation of the Arab world. The usage and waste levels here are staggering. The next big war in this region will be about water, not oil.

If you're from India, Pakistan, and the other sub-continental countries, or from Egypt, the Levant or North Africa, then Dubai is special. It's new, clean, and alive with energy. But you need to consider what the above countries are like. No offense, but they're shitholes compared to the western countries.

If you're from the West, the UAE isn't that nice or special once you get past the initial euphoria and newness of it all. Add to that the restrictions of Islam and I wouldn't recommend it to a single person. Married people with kids seem to like it a lot, as I do, but if you're single, I can think of about 100 other countries that are much better to live in.

On top of all that, I was in Georgia this summer for a couple of weeks. My wife and I were astounded to see that in many areas, the UAE is now more expensive than the US. Clothes, food, housing, all electronics, books, and activities are cheaper in the US. Only labor and gas is cheaper here. You can hire a live-in maid (only if you're married of course) for $400 per month, or get an Indian to build a skyscraper for $300 per month.

The UAE has seen a huge run of inflation over the past 4 years and it's stabilized now, but it'll take off again. There are no price controls or regulations, there is no true competition in the retail markets so there is a depressing sameness of products available, all priced the same. Other than mobiles and watches, everything for sale is old by western standards, at least one generation, sometimes more. Things have gotten so expensive, that it's now cheaper to ship many things from the US rather than purchase them here. This place ain't cheap by anyone's standards.
