@FXSurfer - I live in Varna - it's on the sea coast - nice city, about 1 million, lots of places to live the life of sin
The picture you've posted is from a small historic town - there are lots of those around - a few thousand years old, founded by Greeks once upon a time. As a matter of fact I grew up in one of those, it's called Balchik - still in love with that place.
As to the rest of the details - the price of living is fair, and the internet connection is probably one of the cheapest in Europe - you can get 5 megabits for 10EUR per month, maybe even cheaper. Good education is not pa problem either - lots of foreign universities have branches here, but since this is eastern Europe prices are much lower.
On the downside, what annoys me the most lately are the bumpy roads in most major cities
@ The Fool - there are some very nice beaches for various types of surf. Kite and wind surfing are quite popular around. Winters are much warmer on the coast - we see snow not more than 2-3 times during the winter.

Fool and others: I was reading today (Sunday) in the paper an article about living oversees and taxes. Look for the Wall Street Journal Sunday, writer Tom Herman. He was talking about taxing "earning income", which forex is passive income so the answers will be different. There is an IRS Publication 54 on the IRS' web site. Hope this helps. I wonder how the IRS taxes pirate booty....

A major issus is getting a visa for you and your family. It's not easy in most places. In Thailand if you're over 50 and have 25k in the bank, you can get a residency visa. Other than that it's not easy. There is no limit to the number of times you can enter on a tourist visa in any given period of time; there is a limit to the number of times you can enter the country without a visa though. If you are over 50 you can apply for a non immigrant '0' visa for the purposes of retirement. This can be extended for a year at a time - to do that you need either roughly 25k (800k baht) in a Thai bank as Dopey mentioned, OR a monthly income of roughly 1900 dollars (65k baht). If you have neither of those then you probably can't afford a decent lifestyle here - not in Bangkok anyway. A residency permit is a different matter and can only be applied for after having lived here for three years on unbroken yearly visa extensions. There are other requirements for this, such as demonstrating a certain level of competency in the Thai language, and many people don't bother with them for such reasons.

I would say that if you come here with an open mind and a willingness to adapt then you can have a great life here. If on the other hand you come here with preconceived notions of the place and a misplaced belief that the way you were brought up in the West is the only possible way to be in this world, then you will probably end up a bitter old man who spends his days posting rubbish on sites like thaivisa.

You are opening my mind to Thailand, and I appreciate it. My information comes from an old boss from 20 years ago, who visited it often.
Next: Being from California, where the weather is the best in the world, how are the winters and the typhoons? It is great that the country is open to tourists with reasonable visa requirements. And how could I convince my wife to move there?

That's actually not that cheap if you compare the "per Megabit Costs" with other European Countries. If you get 32Mbps for 25 Euros that's acutally cheaper than 5Mbps for 10 Euros.


I wouldn't say Europe is generally safter than the US. Depends on what
places you compare.

Me is living in sydney, wish to go back to live in thailand but I couln't, I didn't know how to make money over there (lost money in business 2 times in BKK) That why I study fx hard & wishing to go and and live there my country asap, have a peacful live

Any thing you want to know about Thailand let me know bcoz I go back there at least once a year so I pretty sure I know the country quite well. ( 9 yrs back i was living there for 2 yrs)

hope you enjoy living in Thailand. by the way Phuket is very expensive place to live for me. I prefer North 'Chiangmai' the weather is good during winter btw Dec to Feb. If you like beach & sea then Phuket suitable for you and also many european living there so you have your own society

Hi Pete, I agree with you about Phuket being expensive.

I'm not all that keen on living in a Western ghetto by the way, so I tend to keep to myself a lot of the time. In fact I can honestly say that the most disappointing thing about Thailand for me, has been the quality of foreigners living here. I have made only 2 or 3 real Western friends in 6 years of living here. I like to take things as they are, and I just can't identify with the foreigners here who spend so much time complaining about everything.

Isn't that crazy? Having lived abroad a lot myself, it never ceased to amaze me how much time people spent bitching about the weather, food, differences in culture etc. ...often while pretty much being in paradise.

I dont understand your meaning 'Quality'. If you were Thai you would know the the way of thai ppl 'how they live' then you will get by easily
If I live in BKK I can get by easily bcoz I have free accomodation & food very cheap you don't have to cook at all unless you have very big family.I can buy dinner in bag 20 baht for 2 bags cook rice myself with rice cooker that enough for 1 person, 3 bags for 2, 5 bag for family of 4. so 100bahts for dinner- $3us very cheap isn't it? and the taste not bad, but I southern(phuket) the food there are too hot for me and I dont think you will like it the taste is total diferrent from bkk so I guess most of the time you have to eat 'fish & chips' lol. just kidding
For foreigners the most important thing is 'security' bcoz they thing you are 'farang' then you are rich. So be careful where you go - for me it's my country i know the custom very well.

I heard there are many retired europeans living there, well every where in the world are not perfect even though they are complaining but there are still living there anyway, bcoz they can live there luxury in Phuket if they go back to thier own country they have to budget themself that's the main reason.

oh I didnt read carefully you are living there for 6 yrs now (I thought) was your friends so I guess you know thailand very well - may even more than me lol. Forget about what I said then lol

I have only been to Phuket once for the night and it was for work so I don't really know the place or the food. I like stuff like green curry, penang curry, กะเพราเนื้อ (sorry - not sure what to call that in English...stir fried beef with holy basil leaves maybe?), sweet and sour...

I think it's crazy. You know there will be certain things that are not the way they are at home, and some less developed aspects, and of course a completely different culture and language - but that's half the fun of living somewhere new. Some people would be better off staying at home and buying a sunbed
