True opening and closing hours?

I look at differant sources and some say Japan Forex opens at 8:00 p.m. EST, (i.e. NY time), others say 7:00 p.m. EST (i.e. NY time).

Some say NY really slows down at 4:00 pm est, others at 5:00 pm est.

Can anyone help me out?
Those differences of one hour are caused by different dates for daylight savings time due to the fact that not all countries make the switch on the same day.

usually Tokyo opens at 7pm est, London at 3am est and NY at 8am

there are no "true" opening and closing hours, thats the issue. forex is made up of a bunch of banks that trade with eachother. so the hours really depend on when the banks are open for trading.

FF has an indicator on the main "Discussion Page."

This other site primarily uses the Opening and Closing of the Local Stock Markets as a base.

We have 3 main sessions in FX.
Tokio - 00.00 till 07.00am GMT -the least active
London-07.00 til 04.00pm GMT -the most active session
NY -16.00pm till 00.00 GMT -somewhere in bettween

I think thats quite important for those of you who trade GBP/USD...

Time Zone New York GMT
Tokyo Open 7:00 pm 0:00
Tokyo Close 4:00 am 9:00
London Open 3:00 am 8:00
London Close 12:00 pm 17:00
New York Open 8:00 am 13:00
New York Close 5:00 pm 22:00

Hello Superdezign,

- The london session start from 02:00am ET (frankfurt open) until 11:30am ET (end of London).

- New York session start from 08:30am ET (New York open) and end at 17:00pm ET and

- The asian session start at 18:00pm ET (Sydney open) with the bult at 19:00pm (Tokyo open) and close about 04:00am ET.

The most important bulk of activity is between 02:00am ET and 11:30am ET as there is an overlapping of the 3 sessions together.

So according to your chart, there is a spike in volume at NY open which almost equals that at London open? it's strange, because I certainly witness the London open activity on a daily basis but I rarely see that extra volatility at NY open.

Any opinions on NY open volatility?
