Forgetting the whole "whatever is right for you and your money management plan" thing, is a 50pip S/L generally sufficient for on a D1 chart or should it be closer to 100pips to avoid being prematurely stopped out? What's generally good for a H4 and H1 chart as well?

In this case you do have a stoploss. It's called Margin Call.

Place it behind S/R Levels. Anything else is bullshit. Why should anyone use a fixed Stoploss value? Doesn't make any sense.

50 - 100 pips for a daily chart seems low. Using a stop loss position like the recent swing, even on a small recent swing, can be 150+ pips.
For daily I'd say you'd want a stop loss to be 200+...but that's just my interpretation of the daily chart I looked at.
I trade using the 30min,1h,4h charts so I this is only an educated guess.
