How do I set up 2 Meta4 Platforms

Hi everyone,

This is my first post and I'm as new as they come to forex trading. In fact my knowledge is just about zero in that regard. (A point I will be changing) However I have 2 Expert Advisors that I got on the recommendation of a friend, with a view to setting them up on auto trading and leaving them be.

I set one up for automatic trading and all is going well. However I have been advised not to run the 2nd on the same Meta4 platform but to download a 2nd one and run the other expert advisor on it.

The problem is that my PC (Windows XP) won't allow a second one on my computer because I already have it. I'm sure this must be a common problem and you guys have an easy answer .

Please share your knowledge of how I can get 2 Meta4 Platforms running on my PC and overcome the error/warning messages.

Ray - just install the 2nd into another directory.

or just double click on metatrader rapidly, repeatedly, until you have as many platforms open as you need... works for me, but this only works if you don't already have metatrader open

Why can you not run them on the same platform? Do they not use magic numbers? As long as they do, they should be able to run just fine on the same instance of MT4

Even if you install to separate directories I think they share some registry info, and I don't know if you can load both at the same time.

Another way, incase you need it, is to use a virtual machine. MS's "Virtual PC" is free to download, you can install XP on it and setup a 2nd setup there.

If you have multiple computers you can do something else, too. I have a home network w/ a laptop, a server, and 3 other machines. They're all secured behind a router, so I can run remote desktop on one of the other machines, setup MT4 that way and just RDC into the 2nd client. I don't do it that often, but I do have IBFX's trader installed on both this and the other machine to my right. The server's got a VPN setup so I can tunnel in and check my trades via the laptop... which is nice.

One of the problems with 2 EAs on the same MT4 is if the EA trades by symbol rather than magic number. Obviously that can get pretty messy.

A don’t believe two MT4 platforms can run at the same time, even if you have them installed in different drives.

I have run several platforms at the same time from the 1 file. When you open it for the first time, keep clicking to open more... just right now I opened 6 platforms in about 6 seconds by double clicking 6 times... I keep the directory on my desktop.

Sure, but thats just bad coding. Its more effective to fix the EA than to worry about running two instances.

What I have found is this:
1. I couldn't put the 2 EA's on the same platform. It seems they didn't want to work at the same time.
2. I couldn't download 2 platforms on to my PC. It would get it's knickers in a knot and not co-operate.
3. I discovered that I could get 2 platforms up and running by following either the suggestion to multiple clicks on the program or to install it a second time into another folder. Both worked. It was then a matter of getting each of the EA's on to 1 of the 2 platforms.

Straight forward when you've done it, but a bit of trial and error to get there. I now have 1 live account and 1 demo account running.

My next question is has anyone experimented with a withdrawal schedule for optimum returns on these auto set and forget EA's? What I found is that my average daily return for Oct on my live account was $104.71/day, in Nov $89.71/day and Dec it's running at $44.12/day. Remember I know nothing about forex I just want to run a couple of EA's for maximum efficiency.

Your question was how to run 2 MT platforms, not how to run 2 instances of the same platform. There is a difference. My prior post was to answer your question (meaning 2 different account numbers from the same broker or 2 different brokers).

I tried it with my ODL and SIG4T but anysolution function..... any advice.

I have been able to run simultaneously 3 instances of the same MT4 without even reinstalling the program.

Just make a copy-paste of the whole MT4 folder, assign a new icon to the "terminal.exe" file so each one is different and you don't click twice on the same (if opened from the same exe file it doesn't run well) and open both independently.

click start, go to my computer, go to programme files, look for your metatrader folder, click and copy, click paste. It will now be entitled "copy of " your metatraders folder name. Thats it, you now have 2 identical folders, exit prgramme files, and on your desktop right click, create shortcut, and make the shortcut go to the copy of the folder you just copied. Done, when the shortcut opens, you click on terminal and a terminal will open for you to run a different E/A on. hope this helps.
