Ubuntu or Fedora

I want to run metatrader in linux. I really like Ubuntu 6.10 however I have not had much luck with geting it to run metatrader. I would like to run it as close to native as possible. I also have Fedora Core 6 but I would really prefer to use Ubuntu. If anyone can help me with this I would appreciate it. I have tried wine, crossover, vmware, virtual box, and paralells. Let me hear the suggestions. I know some of you are doing it already. If it helps any I will be using IBFX.

Hi! Some time ago I had very similar questions. I have managed to run MT4 on Dapper Drake through wine with some limitations (I was unable to save the layout, could not change the settings of custom indicators) but everything else worked fine. I installed wine from the package downloaded from winehq. I dont recommend installing wine through apt-get. I suppose your problem is the missing dll files. You will need to copy them from your windows machine. You can find them under: C:\\windows\system32\
I don`t realy know exactly wich files they were, to be sure copy all .dll files that begin with mfc (e.g. mfc42.dll)
However I would not trade a live account through an emulator even though wine is not an emulator...
I had very little luck with FC6. I had a hard job even to install wine.

wmware/wmplayer should be the best tool you have. Don't even thing about wine. 10mins down time could mean a lot in forex, reliability is the only thing you should consider. Even better, run linux under windows, im not saying windows is more reliable, just the matter of fact that, windows applications are more reliable to run under windows.

I use MT4 with Crown, FxDD, WestcapFX, and PFGFX under the latest version of Wine. Sometimes the orders "hang" during high volatility but I cannot say if that is Wine/MT4/Broker Server, since I've never run it in anything but Wine, for about 6 months now. Incoming Email does not work (uses 100% CPU), but that is an unnecessary feature of MT4. When the orders hang, I exit MT4 and start it again, takes from 10-30 seconds (that is a broker server issue how fast it starts, it can start in under 5 seconds when the server is fast). I don't think the MT4 "cancel order" feature works well as it evens warns you there is no guarantee on a canceled order.

In both Ubuntu or Fedora, if you install the same level of Wine (0.9.30-1) and MT4 (build 202) I'm running, I'd expect similar results. Update your system to make sure you have the latest Wine version.

As for VMWare -- that should work perfectly, assuming you can get it installed and updated correctly. It isn't that difficult but Mr. Gates efforts with the educational systems (free computers, software, instructors) means you'll never learn the material in a course and the web is littered with obsolete information from 1998, etc. to help frustrate/confuse potential Linux users. If you learn to build your own kernel from kernel.org, you will be able to get VMWare running very well.

As far as the DLLs and fonts I already tackled that issue. I just haven't had much luck thus far. Im still trying to get Vmware to run in Ubuntu. I have a tar of Vmware and havent had much luck yet. I have even heard that there is a service that can be accessed through the web where you can run progs like meta-trader.I'm not really sure. Im running out of ideas. And although it may run better in winblows I am tired of the constant viruses. So I suppose the only other thing to do if all else fails is see what it takes to set up a linux firewall.

Metatrader runs fine under Ubuntu and I have set it up for a few others.

Here is process...

From a fresh wine install....(apt get works just fine)
in console ~ type "winecfg"
change windows mode to windows XP and then close wine configuration
copy mfc40.dll and mfc42.dll to home/username/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32
copy wingding.ttf to home/username/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts
now install metatrader.....
download file and right click on metatrader install file you should have option to "install with wine" select this option.
If you don't have option navigate in terminal to file and type
~wine "yourmetatraderinstallfile.exe"
after that you can add shortcuts etc...
demos are great with linux copy whole directory rename and you have a functioning new demo (delete demo account and open new from inside metatrader)

should install just fine.... first time it starts sometimes it takes a while...

I did manage to get MT4 running though wine on Ubuntu. But it just wasn't reliable enough for me. And I should add it was slow as hell.

Best option is to set up a cheap Windows box from Dell or something on a dedicated internet connection. I just did this.

You can save the money you would spend on VPSs and don't have to deal with running some emulator/virtual machine.

I'm would love to run MT4 (and all my trading software) completely from linux but you have to use the right tool for the right job.

slow as hell??? something must be wrong with your setup.. I run at least 3 demos at once plus live account plus rest of normal software VOIP etc.... AND play can play wow at same time... all on a 2 gig AMD... try that on winblows (on a NICE machine)!

Hello gpw797: My linux system isn't as well resourced as yours. I agree that it is possible to run mulitple instances of MT4 on a good machine. I also need to use APIs from some of my brokers and it is probably possible to use mono or something similar to run those.

Currently, my tick databank runs on a Linux machine and runs real well. My MT4 and other accounts run on a Windows machine, and that works out real well too. I just think you can have the best of both worlds. Run servers on a reliable linux box. Run MT4/APIs on what is was they were designed for, Windows.
