I'm new to forex trading. I am running a demo on forex.com, and everytime I place an order, the order ends up being 5-10 pips away on the losing side from where I wanted the order to be. I start out in the hole as soon as the order is placed. Is this the standard, or is it just with this broker?

It depends on the pair, what you are seeing is the cost of spread. Some brokers have spreads that range from 1-10 depending on the pair. You should see lower spreads on E/U while G/Y is normally one of the 'majorish' that is the higher spread cost.
