I was like this 3 years ago when I made fun of my friend who told me that brokers allow leverage. I did not believe that someone will let you trade more money than you have on your account. But when I understood everything I was highly motivated to learn it. In my country very few knows what's the forex, and why brokers allow you to use leverage.

I take an hour to explain Forex and another hour to explain that I can SELL before and BUY afterwards... Sounds crazy to everybody...

I used to do that but people weren't interested in the detail so I stopped bothering.

Now I just tell them I'm a Professional Gambler and they want to know more ... :-D

I was just reading the job boards, and I remembered a peeve of mine.
Every company has a different name for the same job, sometimes something silly. And even companies in your industry or field of study will give made up names for simple jobs that no one outside the company knows what it is!
And forget about explaining them.

I guess forex trading really isn't much different.

And try explaining the Naked Short Selling controversy to a layperson. I'm just happy you can't do it in forex.

None of my friends seem to understand what forex is either so i just let them think i trade stocks or whatever.

One friend did ask me the other day when would be a good time to buy some dollars cos they are going on holiday soon. That same day the pound hit 9913. I dont think he got his travellers cheques for that, but i think he did alright out of it.

I gave up trying to talk to avergage Joe about what I do. They never seem to get it anyway. I guess thats why I spend so much time at FF...

I suppose you could call some of us bank robbers.

That is the greatest idea ever!!

From now on, I am going to declare myself a bank robber. It fits on so many levels. That should get some attention at parties.

In the movie "9 1/2 Weeks" when Kim Basinger asks Mickey Rourke (a currency trader) what he does for a living, he simply says, "I buy and sell money".

That's my response. The next question I get is "How do you buy and sell money?". I tell 'em to think of how they purchased their $500,000 home (that's 5 lots of currency) with $50,000 in cash (leveraged the down payment to buy the house/currency) and over time, the home appreciated and they sold if for a profit. Only difference with forex is the time it takes for the capital asset to appreciate is light years faster.

I was once asked at a party by someone I was introduced to, what I do for a living and I told him I trade forex.

I was then asked if I did any other kind of axes.

My co-conspirator and I have now whittled out a systematic response to people who ask what I do for a living.

A: "What does he do? I know he doesn't have a job."
b: "He's a trader. Making deals here and there. Buying rumors and selling facts. He also has a network that he works with. But I can't say too much since I'm implicated in his doings (which is true since I manage his money)." (All of this is spoken to sound like the word traitor and played up a bit. At this point, they think I'm some sort of mystery man.)

I like playing with mystery. Otherwise I'll just say I buy and sell the currencies of the world.

True story,

My former employer saw me reading Steve Nison's "Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques" and asked what it was about. I explained it was a way of reading charts for daytrading, and now she asks me how my "candlestick trading" is going whenever she sees me

I have just read through and you all get the same responce as me, glad to see iam not the only one...

Here in New Zealand, trading on anything is unheared off, so Forex/stocks or CFd's are unknown...

I have been trading forex/cfd's for about 5 years, and like most of you I have now given up trying to explain, if you do you get the glassy eye look after 5mins..

I have been called a drug dealer and a gambler. You see working on the computer and making money is outside of most people's thinking, they can only understand if you go to work 40 hours a week..
Then they also dont want to think that you may have found a way to make money..

So I just tell me people iam a labour....and that makes them happy because they understand what the job is and it also means that they stand a very good chance of making more money then me...

Glenn
