Is forex unknown to the public?

I've started forex about two months ago, and I have explained to my family about forex. They don't know what the whole thing is about but they do know that there are dollar currencies and stuffs like that. Anyway, my friends don't know what forex is. So, here is the question: what are the percentage of the public do they know about forex?

27.39%.... lol what does it matter, just say you deal shares - much easier

In the US it's like geography - no one knows about it. In other countries, it is different. When I lived in Costa Rica the kids could tell you what the exchange rate was.

My friends don't have a clue that a exchange market exists.
They think I buy stocks.

I think an exact quantified number would be hard to determine. More know about it outside the USA than inside. You could walk down the street and ask 100 people \"DO you know what the foreign exchange is?\" and talley the answers to get a pretty accurate idea. I would speculate that not very many people know about it without some type of explaination.

BTW in Poland I'm sure only bank staff and friends know, similar in britan.
I have a part time job and when people ask, they have no clue. When I'm saying - trading currencies - they think of money exchange point.

Or if they work for bank or something - they say - you'd better do sth else.

Forex is being popular among many people these days. As the forex ads pops up when we open our msn e-mails and/or u get the ads in any other site easily. After all marketing is done for popularity

Just say you swap a currency for another currency. Makes it easier to explain.

Even out of those who tell you that they understand what you're on about, few actually will.

Many people don't even know what a stock is. They listen to Jim Cramer, call their broker and let them handle things. So long as there's no bailiff at the door and the power is on, they will watch entertainment tonight, find out about Paris Hilton is up to, watch Leno crack jokes about the price of gas and go to sleep. They don't take the time to educate themselves on the topic. They whine that it's too hard, that they're tired. Besides, their shifts at Wal Mart starts early.

So there we have it. The Zombie Nation! They are tuned on Paris Hilton's latest bowel movement and still believe that Bear Sterns will bounce because Jim Cramer said it was silly to get rid of that stock. Like Mr. Green said earlier on this thread, it's like geography. Canada is tucked all the way down there and all of Europe speaks French.
