Multiple Charts in MT4

Just started using mt4 and want to experiment with an EA that I downloaded on this site. I need to have the EA running on several active charts at the same time on my one mt4 demo account. How do I do this? Cannot find how to do this anywhere in mt4 help files. Thanks in advance!

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. There are many ways to open a new chart. A simple one is on the file menu with the 'new chart' selection or use the 'market watch' window to name a couple. Once you have opened the charts for the desired currencies you can set them to the time frame you want. Use the tabs under the charts to select the chart you want. All the charts with tabs shown in the current profile are considered active as far as EA trading is concerned. You need to have an EA attached to each chart that you want to mechanically trade with an EA. You can load the EA to the charts in several ways also. One way is to open the navigator and drag the EA to a chart you want to run it on. Make sure you have the smiling face in the upper right hand corner. This shows the EA is ready to trade. Now you can select another chart tab for a different currency pair and drag the EA to that chart. Continue to select new tabs until you have attached the EA to all the charts you want.

For the EA to work you must have your computer running and connected to the internet. In the 'terminal' window you can click on the 'experts' tab and the 'journal' tab to see if the EA is showing any errors. The windows I mention can be opened on the view menu at the top if they are not already open. Please remember that EAs are not a short cut to make money. It is important to understand the underlying trading principle that the EA is designed from.

You need to have it run on multiple charts or multiple symbols? Because you can easily monitor other symbols or other TFs by changing some code.

Your welcome.
I gave you instructions for a simple EA. As Rabid pointed out an EA can be written to run on more than one chart with the same currency pair or monitor another currency pair and can have the time frame set by the EA independent of the charts time frame. It depends on the EA you are using.

pls room i use the mt4 playform, but i have a problem with trailing s/l
i place a trailing and walk away only to return and see that price rose and fell back to beyond the trailing s/l value an was only stopped by the main s/l itself.pls any idea of the problem? cos i keep losing pips each time this happens

MT4 trailing stops are managed on the terminal/user side. The SL and TP are stored on the server/broker side. For a trailing stop to work you must have the MT4 program open and be connected to the internet.

The MT4 trailing stop will not start trailing until you have a positive pip gain equal to the trailing stop + 1 from the entry price. When the profit reaches the proper level and the trailing stop begins to work the changes are made on the server side to the original SL. You must enter an initial SL on the platform. If I am not explaining this clearly try placing a 10 or 15 pip trailing stop and observe how it works.

Attention: Trailing Stop works in the client terminal, not in the server (like Stop Loss or Take Profit). This is why it will not work, unlike the above orders, if the terminal is off. In this case, only the Stop Loss level will trigger that has been set by trailing stop.

I have many charts opened for different pairs and different timeframes all have the same EA , each have its own magic number for orders

The EA loads my processor when calling a certain function ( takes about 5-10 min ) , I can't change the function so my question :

Q- Is there a way to make the EAs wait till the one that is currently using that function is done , I was thinking of using global variables or read/write to a file but I am newbie so any help/advice is highly appreciated

BTW I don't call the function on each tick or each new bar I call it on each 10 bars but still I need to make one EA use this function at a time

You need to code a Mutex so your EAs don't try to do the same thing at the same time . . .
20 pips a day isn't too much to ask . . .

First, I can't imagine what function would take that much time to load. What indicators are you using on this?

Second, how many is many charts? On my Alpari demo account I have at least 50 charts open at one time. Now only about half have EA's on them some are the same some are different. Plus I have 7 other MT4 platforms all running at the same time. All are running EA's of some kind except one which is my test platform. If any of them took longer than two minutes tops to start up from the time I clicked the icon in the taskbar I would have to start investigating what's wrong with it. It's either the way the EA is written or it's one of the indicators that it uses, or it's time to install a new platform, a fresh copy.

Third, why can't you change the function?
