Simple moving avarage strateges

I am looking for any ideas how to make succsesful strategy just by using simple moving avarage. So far I created strategy which works on paper but failed in reality. So I am looking for any new ideas how people use succesfully Simple Moving Average.
Can anyone point out on some good strategy with SMA?

You should try the 5-13-62 system... it is awsome... just rememebr is is ONLY to use during full blown trend situations... as I belive would be the case for most moving average systems

IMO moving averages for the most part are useless. They lag like all other indicators, and once in a while you get lucky and they give a good signal, but not often enough to be profitable. I use price action/patterns/support&resistance, but like I said, just my opinion.

Also what do you mean by full blown trend situations? If I understand correctly it when no clear trend just ocasional, insignificant ups and downs, right?

I understand EMA is Exponental Moving Avreage, but what is MMA?

I am thinking to place my own system here on forum. I back test it on 8 different pairs and get positive outcome, hovewer because Moving average changes a bit in reallity so far my results not so good.

Moving averages are useful in determining current trends, but using a cross as an entry signal is useless. The market only knows support and resistance.

I use 12 EMa, 55 SMA along with Bollinger Band...

Moving averages are ok, if you want to follow the trend. Most people try to trade the crosses. Apparently forgetting that when moving averages cross there is no trend. This leads to whipsaws, and the generally bad reputation of moving averages as a trading method. It's best to do like Kaufman and go by the slope of the average. In other words trade when the averages are parallel or when the shorter average is moving away from the longer one. This is a valid trend following technique and could be a simple way to position trade or take daily trades. One implementation of this would be the Guppy system. There you look to the long term averages for the trend and wait until the short term averages are moving in agreement with it to trade. I use a slight variation of this on my charts at present using numbers from the fibonacci sequence and dividing them into three groups short, medium, and long. Used this way they keep you away from top and bottom picking and trading in congestion. Crossovers are a lot like trying to pick bottoms and tops and suffer from the same fatal flaw whether it's moving averages or idicators based on them such as MACD or CCI. A crossover does not guarantee that the next bar will go in the same direction. I started with a lot of indicators, but I'm pretty much down to just averages and Absolute Fibonacci lines now. I'm doing much better that way. Last night I put my sell in on the GBP at 1.9426 and a take profit at 1.9292 based on just looking at the averages and studying the pattern of the abfib lines. It was a very good day.

Taxgeek is right on... use it as a guide line to help you use the trend... not so much to buy or sell on the crossovers...

I see how it works now, hopefully I can incorporate in my strategy succsesfuly. If my results improve, I'll post it on forum.

I believe you will find that most discourage trading simply on the cross of moving averages since you would need large account to sustain the whipsaws when the market is not trending. There are some moving average that will tell you the direction of the market like the 200 EMA, the golden cross and the death cross. I had tried trading using MA crosses since its so simple, you will get many bounces crossing back and forth every so often even within minutes of each other. Nothing wrong with moving averages, just try using other indicators for entering and exiting a trade.

MA crossover systems can work, the key is once you catch the big trend you have to ride it for all you can in order to make up for the 40 times you got stopped out before catching said trend. It takes balls to do this. Imagine you're dying the death of a thousand stop outs and you're finally in a winning trade that's up 200 pips, you'd be very tempted to exit with your profit, but if you do and it goes for another 500 you'll have missed your big trend that was going to make up for all those times you were stopped out.

So really the key is knowing when to get out, but in order to know that you'd have to be able to see the future. No wonder trading is so tough.
