Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum and would like to know if you can help with me with some Metatrader questions <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>

1. Can you import third-party live feed into MT4 (from brokers that don’t offer MT4, example IneractiveBrokers)<o></o>

2. Is there a way to execute expert advisor strategy on a third-party broker that doesn’t support MT4 (for example Interactive brokers) <o> </o><o> </o>

If anyone as a possible solution or knows of a product that can do this , it will be very helpful <o></o>

Both could be accomplished provided that whatever broker you're using provides some sort of programmatic access to data and automation via code (an API). I don't know of anyone who's gone through the trouble, it would be a pretty significant effort to get it all up and working.

Poor man's solution? Use data from an MT broker for charting and have an EA alert you to specific conditions. Trade with your non-MT broker as before.

I have both (Feed and automation functions via API (DLL)<o></o>

question is how do I "inject the price feed into MT4 (what interface)<o></o>

and how do I get the alerts (for fills or order placement/Cancellation) from MT4 out to my application <o></o>

I guess I should have used wording a bit stronger that "significant effort". I expect that even for an experienced programmer it's more trouble than it's worth.

It sounds like you're using a non-MT broker (I have firm grasp of obvious, eh?) and want to automate trading. If that's the case, I wouldn't bother at all with Metatrader and would instead focus on the API that they provide. I'll caution that you probably won't find it as easy to work with as MetaTrader.

The other alternative is to switch to an MT broker.

Yes, its is a none MT4 broker (InteractiveBrokers)<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>

Since I have the systems coded in MT4 (also you can back-test on the fly) I rather use MT4 for generating the signals<o></o>

Some applications let you do this with systems programmed in TradeStation (more for futures trading) where you can route the signal to a different broker, but I haven't seen one for MT4, I am a knowledgeable programmer , do you have any technical insight on the matter (getting feed into and signals out of MT4?<o></o>

I expect that you'll be using a pair of custom DLLs to trade info back and forth. On the MetaTrader end you'll have to populate/update a custom chart or two and then let the EA do it's thing as normal (against your modified chart). I expect the period_converter script would hold a clue or two.

I use Interactive too, and very much would like to connect MT4 to TWS to receive data for charting purposes only, not automated trading.

If the above materialised, I would have futures charting on MT4 as well as FX.

There are a number of charting systems which use TWS as their data feed, not sure if this is possible for MT4

A quick way to send Alert to other platform
is to send via email or ftp,
since you are able to put what ever string you want in the email/file
you can put buy/sell order with price...

For mail, (They are delay with server) you install a small pop server on your lan. and retreive email (what ever you can do)
Ftp: you just put file in a directory and read only new file.

If your API is allowed to read a file or pop server...

Hum! the only thing the script does is to put values(open,close etc) in the ".hst". And this file is loaded when MT4 is open or when we download/update the history. Not when the MT4 is runing. Live it use server to retrieve info.

Does MT4 have a function for sending out email notification on order status (like TradeStation)?

My bad, I thought that it allowed you to use nonstandard charts (i.e. 3 min) in realtime. If that were the case, it would hold clues as to how to do it yourself.

Someone else mentioned using email or ftp to route messages. If you're not going to use API to API communication, I'd suggest writing out data to a text file as opposed to email or ftp. Less overhead, less delay.

I rather use API to API (if available) if not, how do you suggest writing to a text file (can this be done in real-time)?

It can be done real-time. I suggest you start with the MQ4 documentation related to file functions.

Unfortunatly no, you canot use other timeframe other than the one offer by MT4 1-5-15-etc.. The script take the 1 minute and add the value togheter, lets say for 5 minutes, and then put the result in a EURUSD5.hst
Theres is hst for each timeframe... I would have loved that...

True, if you use the same machine its is more advise to put it only in a file/directoyry,
Faster, less ressources... And you just check new arrival in the folder...
Email and Ftp was just a idea, sometime you dont use the same OS or computer.

Read/write a std file with order. The one on MT4 will push data (Write to file).

If your a expert, you know that what DLL does in the background, the program in theorie, is not suppose to know nothing of its behaviour.

Taking that into consideration, maybe you could implement a DLL to DLL talk, like Thread to Thread, Server client kind of talk, like DDE.

I'm not a expert in this categorie, but i'm sure it can be done.

The EA should be done in MT4(Easier i think), if its already done you just replace order by command(Push to file method).

If you start from scratch(No EA yet), then creating a EA is not necessary,you can use CI since you dont use order command.
(But EA is better Anyway, to test the strategy in MT4 before using it, you can use isTesting() to tell him if he push to file in real or simulate buy stop in testing mode ).

Also create you own export command: This way, if you change platform your not stuck with proprietary API .

If it was me i would keep thing simple like:
DateTimeOrdered , OrderType , OrderCommand
(OrderCommand like: [email protected])
(OrderType define the OrderCommand scheme)

Its my 2 cents....;-)

check out this wonderful indicator:

it basically allows you to have a custom timeframe on MT4

following this example, you could use the IB API and have it write data to a CSV file.

modify the above indicator to get data from the CSV file.

if you are not scalping off a minute chart, this would work fine.

when you have created the application to get data from IB and write to file, please let me know
