Hi there, I'm just wondering, does anybody print out their charts and do their homework from there? Or is everybody just doing their TA straight from the computer.

I use to..since I am naturlaly hands on..but I learned to adapt to using the computer..less ink, less paper.
Nothing is hard, some things just take more time and discipline.

I don't see the point in printing charts.

If you see it on the screen it's not going to be any clearer on a sheet of paper. When you make adjustments you have to reprint the chart when you add a new trendline or indicator. You can't zoom in or out either. It's just a waste of time, money, and effort to print charts if you ask me.

You can't set alarms or orders on a piece of paper either. Learn to do everything from your computer. It'll make your trading that much easier. Matt

If I have a chart I want to keep for future reference I just put it in my folders that I have categorized for charts. I used to print charts but I find it's better keep on the computer. Less paper and ink. It's much easier to add comments or notes to a chart when it's on the computer so I can find it later.

I guess printing charts would be useful for instance if you want to have a record of past NFPs or other news events and how the market reacted.

I agree, if you want to store past charts for whatever reason, just take a screenshot and save it as a digital copy. Same thing really, and for most people easier to find.

I chart my dailies by hand with a ruler on an actual sheet of paper! This must sound crazy to a lot of people.

The reason I do so is because when I went to school computers were in their inception, all math was done with pencil and paper, and everything seems to register in my brain a lot better if I use paper instead of television screens to look at this stuff. It seems more real to me. Just my 2 pips...

i understand what he mean,
and thats exactly what i want to do as soon i can get my hand on a laser print... :-)
I agree with dukeofdents, when i write, i will keep more information an put more attention to it( i'm 32, old school ;-) ).
But twinchell is right, put your drawing in a Word document its easier to keep track of the progress at the same time. You can print later also...

The best would be to have a program, espacially made for forex, to keep past result, like a scrapbook...

Anybody know of a program already done?(Specialise program i mean)
I know Peter Bain sale something like that, but the last time i saw it,
i did not love it.

I print charts because I also like to destroy trees. We just had a nice fire over at my Mom's house, sitting around opening gifts and what-not. We burned about 10 logs, not only destroying trees but burning them with the intention of polluting the atmosphere to cause global warming, (notice I didn't capitalize "global"). That was our intent, also, to pollute the atmosphere, not to have a nice Christmas fire with a big old Yule log to celebrate the season.

Printing charts destroys trees, too, which is why I do it. Not to improve my understanding of the market because I'm used to working off paper. I hate the environment and I hate trees, so it's fun to waste paper then put it in the recycle bin out back. Oh shit, I admitted I have a recycle bin...

I've been thinking of printing a looooong chart of GPB/USD on an intraday time frame and laying it out somewhere. Then marking out common patterns and nuences.

Some things are just easier outside the computer. ...It's getting rarer ,but there are certain cases.

I chart on paper because it hits me psychologically more than seeing it on a television screen, which is what a computer monitor is to me. If you're 18 years old you won't know the difference, but those of us that were educated with pencils understand. A monitor is just unreal to me, a piece of paper speaks. It's all in when we grew up and how we were educated, I guess...

Yeah, I used to keep a binder w/ past charts. Easy to make notes right on the paper charts. Also, if you do something like this, be sure to review them, otherwise it's pointless.

I print charts too, it's so much easier to absorb the information compared to the screen. In market wizards and pit bull, lots of top traders do their charts by hand =\

i print out my charts. i like to look at the longer term on a daily. and i also print the hour to pick out double tops and triples and other signs. if i stay on my computer to do this i get distracted by other things and wont stay to look at my charts.

LOL! Well I guess it depends. If the market is going my way, I'll support planet earth and be merry. If not, I suppose printing out 200+ charts on paper only justifies my 'being angry'

I printed the chart for my research and found the match for next tradings. I compared many papers of charts and found the match then I would know where to go: buy entry or sell entry. Without printing them, I would say I have no idea for the predication.

Hey, I grew up with computers , and became a computer tech by default because of my experience with them. Yet I still prefer to read on paper if I can. UNLESS I feel it would be a waste of paper, which is the case for anything that will take less than half an hour to read on the screen. It's only for wasting paper and spending truck loads on ink cartridges that I rarely do print now.

Can you do this with the computer screen?....

...Have your fingers resting at reference points at certain pages in a technical book. Flicking back and forth to check something that's mentioned later on.

There are short cut keys etc on a computer, but it's not anywhere near as convenient and is usually more mentally draining.
