you need a broker that offers trading on gold. I have heard people say oanda offer it with a lower spread. You will have to pay interest on long positions I would imagine.

Trading gold is just like with other currencies, you trade either technical analysis or fundamental.
Look at the chart, apply your Indicators and decide long/short.
Read the news, good for gold? bad for USD? go long XAUUSD.

OIL on the other hand is different. Oil contracts expire (i think every 20th of the month) and therefore, OIL prices start anew. Though I am long OIL, i cant simply place Long OIL because of this predicament. If you are caught with a position when the contract expires, your positions are forced to close win or lose.
