I was always taught 10 dollars price is 100 pips. Which is why I wanted to check as I know there seems to be different school of thoughts on it

thats correct

pips is what ticks are in futures

so 10 dollar move is 100 pips or ticks

Oh Yes!
For XAUUSD on MT5, the conversion depends on how your broker quotes gold, but for most brokers:

  1. 1 pip = 0.10
  2. 10 points = 1 pip

Therefore:
1000 points = 100 pips
Quick reference for Gold:
PointsPipsPrice Move
10 points1 pip$0.10
100 points10 pips$1.00
500 points50 pips$5.00
1000 points100 pips$10.00
2000 points200 pips$20.00
For example, if Gold moves from:

  1. 4050.00 → 4060.00

that's:

  1. $10 move
  2. 1000 points
  3. 100 pips

Since you trade on MT5 mobile, this is likely the pricing convention you're seeing.
