The biggest challenge for self-taught traders is confirmation bias, meaning they will practice and learn those things that "feel good" or "make sense" to them, instead of the skills that actually are needed. YouTube and social media "trading gurus" are popular because they sell into this confirmation bias by creating content that "makes sense" or "feels good". You could say that most self-taught traders fail because they don't know what they need to know.

Yes, there are professional traders that are self-taught but these guys made it because they were willing to do all the uncomfortable things that felt awful and didn't make sense that seasoned professionals would have taught them.

Yes, but the problem is that inexperienced traders have no idea what "every lesson" should include---despite "knowing everything" from trading forums and YouTube videos---making those "enough hours" a waste of time because they still lack essential skills.

You have to have an idea of what things need to be learned in which order. A retail part-time trader's approach to learning to trade professionally is like an aspiring fighter pilot thinking they just need to go on an internet flight sim forum, get a bunch of tips and log a bunch of hours on their PC flight sim---without going to flight school, no understanding of the actual plane being flown, wind, weather conditions and so on.

I do this for a living and know several pro traders that use algos as well as several that don't. The thing they all have in common is a vast deep knowledge of the financial markets and the skills to analyze them. The pro algo traders have top-notch analysis skills, are finely tuned in to the evolving market conditions and are profitable trading manually---if they so choose. In other words, they aren't failed manual traders who decided to use algos to solve their "emotional and psych issues". On the contrary, these guys are highly skilled manual traders and they're constantly tweaking / adapting their algos to the market.

Unfortunately, profitable traders won't stick around on forums or if they do, they tend to stay in the background and really don't bother to "teach", it's a thankless job. This is what I mean by confirmation bias being the biggest enemy for struggling traders. You aren't a profitable trader, don't know what profitable trading looks like but you assume you can tell whether someone is a successful simply by looking at their chart analysis???

I looked at eTrade360s posts and while I'm not 100% sure of his analysis technique, there are things that I can observe:

  1. trades the DXY and GC futures, bought physical gold (knows enough about what's happening in the global economy to protect his wealth via hard money)
  2. charts are simplified, all the complex understanding of the market is not visible on the chart, it's ingrained from experience and he doesn't need to have it on a chart
  3. trades what he sees not what he thinks, i.e. he reads the markets without letting his emotions / opinions interfere

All 3 tell me that he's an experienced trader/investor. Even if I don't know anything else about him, #3 alone is the hallmark of a trader that knows what he's doing.

A struggling trader's worst enemy isn't the markets, it's the mirror, i.e. their personal confirmation bias.

Read every one of this guy's posts in the thread. His system is very good and includes elements of what I meant by "reading the market" => trend analysis via fractals, momentum analysis via stochastics, qualitative assessment via elasticity, etc.

When going through the thread, stay away from putting on trades, that's the least important part and it will end up distracting you from the real learning. Instead focus on understanding what he is actually doing, how he is doing it and why he's doing it that way. Hint: He is reading the market and assessing the quality of the set up prior to putting on any trade. Also note that he doesn't act on every setup signal, he assesses the trend, its momentum and filters out the low quality setups, only taking the best ones when they present themselves.

because most of Trader Z didn't learn from beginning basic ABC 1st grade. They quick learned most from YT channels, dreamed to have millions of $$ fast, can live in triple garage house, drive luxury cars. They didn't think trading is the job as every jobs in the world, and skip training courses step by step. Supposed you join military, you must go to training base before real battlefield. Supposed you work for McDonald burger 1st time, you must hear them tell you everything bla bla.. work with co-workers, they help you practice more. The more you patience stay in your job, the more you have experiences, and it's time thinking bid higher positions up to GM, or higher.. It took more times to build your skill in the job but correctly way. Trading job is same, nothing difference.

Yes, 100% agree. Most of them treat it like a hobby or get rich quick scheme, instead of a profession that requires actual education, training, practice and / or mentorship.

The new generation has grown up with the speed of the internet, quick access and instant gratification. Unfortunately they tend to struggle when they find out the real world doesn't work that way.
