It has become clear that this is not working...we are fighting the trend and the tools implemented to limit this are not enough. I will post some pics right now to show some trade closes that don't seem to fit with the rules. I don't know whether or not the EA is just too complicated to run efficiently (too many variables and inputs)...IDK

Going forward I would like to ask for peoples opinions on whether or not we should try to tinker with existing rules or come at this with a different approach all together.

I do have such an approach in the works which is a polar opposite of what we are doing here, to this point. It has shown great potential with the preliminary backward visual tests...

My question is do we stay with this thread and keep going or is it better to abandon this thread and start a new one???

If you have an opinion on any of this please don't be shy about giving your opinion. I am open to a re-think/re-tool at this point.

I think we should look for a new approach, one that follows the trend. I have experienced that EA often goes against the trend. Sometimes it manages to catch a trend reversal and then wins big, and then loses little by little.

I agree with you pusztafie and I think this is the consensus of the followers of this strategy, we have been trading against the trend and trying to get out of trades earlier and earlier to the point where most wins are gobbled up by a couple losses.

What is evident is how nice this system works when it is used as a trend confirmation system. To this end, I have been working on a few ideas on how best to implement this idea.

I would like to keep this thread going with, yet again, a new method...but if a new thread is warranted then we can start a new one.

So I will present the method in this post and if it needs to be moved then I will copy it to a new thread.






This new method still uses the ATR Bands mtf and the Ptl-207 indicators and we have a new friend called FVE (Finite Value Elements) which is used as a trend confirmation along side the Midline and the Dots.

I did the visual back tests using two methods of exits one was a close outside the outer band, resulting in a SL hit or a win, which I calculated as raw pips and the other was based on RR, specifically when price hits 3R I moved the SL to BE and closed 1/2 the position then after 4R was hit I moved the SL to 2R and closed the trade at 6R or if price does not reach 6R then it would close on 2R, resulting in either a SL hit at -1R or a win of 2.5R or a win of 3R.

What I like about the pips method is that the wins are proportionally greater than losses. I never had any time that the price fluctuated back to parity, while using the RR method, while overall hugely positive there were times where it would come back to 0 or - R.

The chart has the same Midline with 3 ATR bands and the Dots then along with the FVE we trade either long or short according to the following rules.

BUY example:
If a candle has a green dot and closes above the Midline we look at the FVE and see if the green line is above the red line (the value of the green line must be higher than the previous value, 1 candle back, it can not be the same value either).

SL goes at the lowest price looking back 7 candles.

There is only one trade allowed at a time.

That is it...simple, straight forward and uncomplicated.

The pics are showing both methods of exits, I do not know which is more profitable but the results for the last 7 trading days were 7021 Pips and 60R

As a follower of this thread, I would like to share some of my thoughts with the members. I had despised martingale and gridding systems. Anybody with a small enough experience in trading would tell you to stay away from these. But, I managed to find some research on these types of systems. The author I followed is named Taranto, and he published his PhD thesis on this strategy. I had no idea that they could be useful systems when you constrain them.

I published this on MQL5 codebase, so it's free and open source. I think if you and the other members of this community were to tinker/experiment with it, it could prove to be a beneficial endeavor.

To introduce the system in short, it's a normal gridding system but it has 3 modes for 3 different market conditions (BGT, TGT and MGT), cycles age and kill-switch. These are 3 main features of it among many. I tested on M1 GOLD and found that the trend-following system (TGT) worked the best. If you want to test the system, disable BGT (there's an option for this in the EA) and test the system. Keep everything to default.

My main hope is that if you are to find this interesting enough, maybe one of your strategies can be merged with this and the EA can be enhanced. Because as of now, it just trades based on grids, but it can be more beneficial if we had a proper strategy underneath the EA.

Another excellent improvement approach, that was exactly what I was talking about. Today the impasse is in the Risk Reward, and even so, in the tests I did in a real account it proved to be resilient. I believe the big difference will come from now on.

Thanks to everyone for the support.

Before I react to what amvt has posted I would like to add a comment about the results of the trend following method described above.

While waiting to go to sleep, in bed last night, it occurred to me that as I went through the trades using the RR exits I never got a BE close, that is to say, once it hit 3R and the SL was moved to BE it only ever closed at 6R or 2R. What this means is that we can expect that trades will mostly close at -1R, 2R or 6R with the outside chance of BE. Regardless this means that the RR amount of the tests is considerably higher because it is pointless to close 1/2 the trade at 3R (as laid out in the rules).
Also this gives us the flexibility to adjust the SL even higher...so once 3R is reached SL moves to BE then I moved the SL to 2R once we touched 4R and I now think it is OK to move the SL to 3R once 5R is touched. We now can expect closes at -1R, 3R, 6R or BE

OK OK amvt...you keep boggling my mind with the things you are into...LOL
I have read the PDF several times, I still do not understand most of it. Your MQL5 page is a little easier to absorb...but while reading I was reflecting on the different methods here in this thread and thinking that this would apply completely to both the last two methods described.

I have some visuals I made to try and see it in a real picture not a computational description. The first few pics show three consecutive candles their trades are based on the grid in MT5

I don't blame you, it took me about 3 weeks to read through the thesis and develop the EA. So it's not easy by any means. BUT, that's why I have made an article for it to explain what the EA is doing. However, it's in the review process by the MQL5 moderators. I can give you (and the members) an early peek so you can atleast understand what you are dealing with.

I have provided the Article zip file. You don't even need to extract it. Just open it and click the bgcarticle.html file, it will open in your browser. You will be able to read through the full article which includes detailed explanation in a digestible manner. Hope this helps.

I want to start a new thread with the EA from amvt...I have a few ideas...the mind is running at speed...LOL

This thread will be my focus, I just do not want to confuse this thread any more than I have already.

I am very optimistic because there has been a varied set of charts in the tests and there hasn't been a noticeable drop off on any of the days.

FF member majoh has kindly made an EA for this already (of his own accord) and we are working out the bugs and hopefully we can release it soon.
