How Institutional Flow Called the USD/JPY Rally Before It Happened

Most retail traders were caught off guard by the USD/JPY surge. Those tracking actual flow weren't.

Here's the breakdown:
On February 25, institutional client-side RFQ volume hit massive levels, buyers put in $847M USD. The very next day, February 26, another $713M USD in buying. Combined over just two days? $2.8 Billion in total notional volume dealt. That's not noise. That's conviction.

When you see two consecutive sessions of that kind of buy-side dominance in the RFQ flow, combined with non-bank dealer executed order data pointing in the same direction, you don't need a crystal ball. The smart money was quietly loading up.

USD/JPY started climbing from February 27 onwards.

Then on February 28, the US-Iran crisis headlines dropped. By March 2, USD/JPY was screaming higher as safe-haven USD demand exploded on top of the already-bullish flow positioning.

The lesson? The flow was there before the catalyst arrived. Institutional RFQ data doesn't predict news, but it does tell you where the real money is positioned and when a macro shock hits in the same direction, the move is violent and fast.
