Since we talking about stocks, UPS.

The trend channel is just to show the down trend.

Also look at all the wide spread down bars and each time price makes a new LL/LH. Not a healthy stock, we saw a bump up in price this week, its a good bet it was sold as price rose.

I also reviewed the Monthly & Weekly in my journal and they are just as bad.

I am hoping that we get some No Demand early in the week so that I can establish positions from a position of (greater) strength. There's always a possibility of a gap lower right when you don't want it though, so I will set up a game plan for that as well

Hello friends. I am try to learn VSA. My internet research tells me to use 'Better Volume'. Its look like cool but there is a problem. I don't know how to use it. I didn't find any documents about it. Is there a some documents or videos that can I learn something?

Better volume wasnt coded specifically for VSA, so there isn't any documentation. I remember seeing, years ago a website by the original better volume creator and his version of trading volume. I couldn't tell you if the website is still around.

Most people who use better volume and VSA just look at the bars that better volume highlights and then use them as climatic volume . Better volume isn't necessary or a huge help, look for big increases in volume and also look for big decreases in volume.

thanks for your reply. My research has shown that better volume is calculated based on price spread, trading volume, and closing price. So, do you have any suggestions for me to learn VSA?

Go to your favorite search engine and search for Master the Markets by Tom Williams. Its available for free, I believe traderguider the company who owns the rights has it on their website.

Also read this thread, there is a wealth of knowledge from Malcom, HiddenGap, Intel and Pres78.

You can check out the site emini-watch.com. I know there was a PDF on Better Volume at one point.

Like Anotan said, Better Volume wasn't specifically created for Volume Spread Analysis (VSA); however, it can be used as a complement to it.

For example, one of the volume/price relationships highlighted by Better Volume is a High Churn Bar. In VSA, we call this bar a High Churn or a Squat or an Effort vs Result bar. What one calls it matters less than what the bar represents.

Typically, High volume is associated with a wide range. When there is high volume, but the range of the price bar is narrowed, this means something. It means some "force" is compressing the range. And said "force" is either Supply or Demand. Therefore, when one sees high volume on an UP bar with a narrow range, it is likely the case that all the buying (Demand) was being met by selling (Supply). Of course, there is a buyer for every seller, but in this case, there was so much Supply present, the range did not need to move much to find it. Accordingly, we see a lot of Effort to move the price, but not a lot of Result (range).

Heres a messy trade that is finally starting to pay.

You can't really see it, but the volume on Nov 14th was pretty climatic... so of course we expect price to move off that volume. Today we're just following the trend, whats the trend you ask? Price breaks out to the upside then returns to the previous day's highest volume only and then continue to the upside.

Its always fun to post trades where price immediately goes in your direction, but there will always be trades where if you're a day trader you may have to wait till the next session to get paid... or if you're a swing trading you may have to wait a few days for that paycheck.

I think EURAUD wins the most obvious trade of the year award.

To say the Dec 3rd had some weakness would be an understatement. I originally waited for price to return to the previous day's highest volume, but price decided it would rather break down and through the previous day's low, sold it when price came back.

A little bit of luck with my entry, I could've easily entered on that wide spread up bar 3 bars prior.. yeah I fell asleep.

Another little trade, EJ short.

Couple of things here look at the highest volume from Dec 2nd, on Dec 3rd price rallied above the highest volume bar then failed and push down and through Dec 2nd's highest volume.. Not healthy now look at Dec 3rd's highest volume with the upper wick making it look like a weak upthrust.

This is a Volume Spread Analysis (VSA) 101 set-up.

The highest volume interval appears on a DOWN bar. While there is certainly some buying on this interval, the interval on the whole is weak. Accordingly, this is an instance where a DOWN bar is weakness as opposed to strength.

How do we know this?

1. the next interval does not close UP.
2. Once we apply the trigger matrix, we see that price can't stay above the Mean Threshold (50% Fib line).

I would be looking to get short after the ND the first time price tried to climb up the the Mean Threshold. With a stop on the other side of the matrix. I would have had to take a little heat, but the fact that price couldn't stay above the Mean Threshold would have given me comfort.

Those who want to learn VSA should learn to identify the most recent highest/significant volume interval and then place a FIB on that interval. The resulting trigger matrix creates the "playing field" and guides many of your actions.

I would start off by saying that you're on the best source in existence right now. Right here you will find posts by Anotan, Malcom, Pres 78, Intel, and many other top notch Volume Spread Analysis (VSA) proponents.

With that said, the best place to start is with Tom's book, Master the Markets.

Tradeguider has a lot of free material on YouTube. Much of it involves a sales pitch, but there are some genuine teaching moments in the videos if you are patient enough and listen intently.

Dr. Gary Dayton is a true chart reading savant. He has some videos on YouTube and his own website.

Philip Friston's work is also in a league of its own.

Honestly, I would point to the "new" Tradeguider methodology taught with the trade to win package. While I do not believe one needs Tradeguider software to learn and trade VSA, the trade to win package creates the Trigger Numbers automatically, and the Trigger Number Matrix (my term not theirs) cuts to the essence of VSAs application in trading.

Which bring us back full circle to this tread, or one poster in particular: Pres 78. His VZA thread is a must read.

i would consider 1 a climax bar - closed my longs there just in case of a two bar reversal. it has a wide spread and much higher volume compared to all the previous bars. i think in general 2 would be consider more climax since the higher volume but i read it as stopping volume/sell off. 3 and 4 look like a two bar reversal. its a very small trade obviously. i just took it for the thrill. the general trend of oil looks bullish so wouldnt hold the trade for a long period.

Here is 5 min chart from the futures market (MES).
I'm wondering how you would play this from the vsa perspective.

1 shows the market open from the US session, the bar is fibbed

The market breaks out, goes down to retest at 2, then shoots up on a large spread, high volume up bar.

But the up move isn't sustained for long and the market falls into a range.
At 3 the market rapidly collapses to the 50% fib level from which it eventually recovers.

The rapid collapse didn't surprise me, as there were sellers showing on lower TFs.

The issue that constantly troubles my trading is finding entries, where would a good entry be on this chart, long or short.

And generally, how would one go about scalping this range on lower TFs? What signs would you look for?

For longs, it is taught here to look for low volume tests, but I have issues spotting those at the bottom of the ranges.

After price breaks out of the zone I'll look for an entry at the mid point. If the trend is aggressive then more than likely I'll miss the entry because price either bounces off the high or simplely doesn't return to test the zone.

For the entey I try to get as close to the 50% as possible. Maybe even dropping to a lower time frame to find the entry bar.

From there just wait till a few bars break out of the zone to set break even. You can take a partial at break-even if you like or hold the whole thing. Use daily pivots or Murray math to find TP levels.

It's a simple repeatable process that makes trading boring.

Based on the matrix, I see a couple of long entries. However, the larger issue that must first be addressed is; what is the trend?

On this time frame, it appears that the trend was DOWN and then the market started to move SIDEWAYS. On a higher time frame the trend might still be DOWN, or it might be UP for this entire period. The point being, whether one uses a single time frame or multiple time frames to determine trend, trend direction is vital as it dictates whether you are looking to be long or short.

One of the entries comes around the area where you have marked a "2". The other comes around the area you have marked "3". This tells me you are seeing more than you think. Note also that the first entry comes around the 100% (75% for me) level of the matrix, and the other comes around the 50% level of the matrix. But each one is only valid if the trend is UP.

It is true that Volume Spread Analysis (VSA) can be used to find tops and bottoms. However, it is also true that 98% of VSAers should be trading with the trend and not against it.
