The EA has been developed. According to my assessment it's working as intended, but it still needs to be verified by the author(s) and the community.



The indicator for this EA, as of now, is not being developed due to busy schedule, but I felt the need to deliver the EA as promised. So here it is.

DISCLAIMER: The EA is unrefined in terms of profitability and consistency. It's NOT profitable. It's NOT recommended to trade this strategy.

Recommendations: What I do recommend is the community to refine the EA further through experimentation and discuss intellectual/interesting ideas. If something feels promising, I can add it to the EA and test it to prove its viability.

Note: The EA draws the horizontal + diagonal lines only in strategy tester. Make sure to turn on the visual mode to see the EA in action.
Also, it requires 2 indicators:

1. ZigzagColor.ex5 - Located in `MQL5\Indicators\Examples\`



2. FractalZigZagNoRepaintMt5.ex5 - Located in `MQL5\Indicators\`



The first indicator is usually pre-installed as it comes with MQL5 installation. So no need to download it, if it's already there. The second indicator is a must. If any issue arises during the setup, please let me know.

Because of you have been extremely respectful and kind I have created the MT4 version, however, I have not compiled it as I don't have MT4. So, if any issues or compilation error arise you need to tell me so I can fix them.

NOTE: I have no idea how correct the EA is in terms of strategy logic, or if it has bugs or errors because I have only written the source code. As I don't have MT4 neither an MT4 brokerage account, I can't test it. Hence, if any issues arise, let me know.

The issue is caused by the ZigZag indicator distributed with MT4. It's logic is flawed and from the inputs I assume that the FractalZigZag uses the same or similar logic. I can't check the implementation of MT5, but using 3 input parameters (Depth, Dev, Back) points to the flawed and incorrect MetaQuotes logic. All ZigZags from MetaQuotes which I have seen come with this logic, which imho is nonsense. This logic aims to reduce signals in a ranging markets, and that's exactly the result you get on the provided screenshot: missing signals. Another result of this flawed approach is heavy repainting. Not talking here about the developing last leg but about repainting of the last reversal point. In very rare circumstances it's even possible that the indicator may repaint the previous reversal point (the one before the last one). Of course this makes the original MetaQuotes ZigZag rubbish, you can't use it for anything.

For those reasons I rewrote the ZigZag and fixed the described issues. The approach: basis of the ZigZag is always a Donchian Channel. Essentially a ZigZag is just a different visual representation of a Donchian Channel. And Donchian Channel rules are quite simple. With this it's possible to build a truly non-repainting ZigZag.

I agree with you. Repainting indicators, in general, have never made sense to me. Why would someone create an indicator that changes its behavior on past data based on the incoming data? To fool the user? It doesn't make any sense.

For the quoted post, the issue was solved. Chris said he was using different settings and that caused the arrows to show up in MT5 but not MT4. After validating this, he was indeed correct.

Your solution is very interesting and could be a viable alternative for this EA. However, my main objective was to create the strategy as outlined by the author. If I start experimenting, I personally would've never touched technical indicators, and focused more on quantitative tools. But that discussion is futile especially on FF where these tools aren't given much appreciation and labeled as "complex" or "academia-related".

Hence, it's best I let the community itself experiment with the EA and if any idea seems promising enough, I'll implement it. Thanks again for sharing your github repo

No, 2023-2025 specifically for SPX.

However, those results were based on a different methodology, since chris requested more changes to the EA. You can follow up from that post to understand what changes were made.

Yep, a lot of stuff. So, I'm a one man army here and all of my energy and focus is currently going into developing this.

I apologize, but seeing that the MetaTrader5 expert works perfectly (as tested and guided by your instructions) I would recommend in the meantime to test that out. Hopefully it will save you some time

I wanted to fix the EA since I got some time, but to me it feels like it's working as intended...I am not sure what the issues are.




Again, I might be incorrect, but in my brief testing of the EA, it worked like it should and there were no issues. The arrow thing you mentioned, is not the issue of my EA, but the indicator provided by james (I believe) and I can't guarantee anything for its reliability as it was not developed by me. Also, interestingly, it never happened within my testing. The arrows were being placed where they should be.

Also, I did not had issues with EA taking re-entries as you suggested. I might need a deeper explanation to fix this properly. Otherwise, I again urge you to use a more stable EA which is available in MT5 but if you still want to use the MT4 version for whatever reasons you may have, please discuss the issues in a bit more detail so I understand if it's related to my EA, or the indicators that are being used inside the EA.

Thanks for replying...you are a true gentleman (I am assuming you are male). Anyway, I agree with you that the arrows are associated with the indicator. Can I ask which one you used, was it the one from me on post 228, or is it one you made from the MT5 version you posted...if it is different from the one I posted can I use mine?
One more thing I noticed was when running the EA during trading live, if I change any properties in the EA it erases any plotted objects and stops trading and I need to remove it and then add it to the chart again.
