Here's a webpage discussing the federal buildings renovation projects.

These are big, old buildings dating back to the 1930's. A lot of the renovation work is being done for systems and building features that have not been updated since then.

I've worked on cost control for a number of public projects like this. A lot of old public buildings that are being renovated would be better off being torn down and replaced with something modern. But, typically that doesn't happen, in the name of "historic preservation." I can go along with that, sometimes. Old architecture has been around for decades or centuries and becomes part of the "face" of these institutions.

In general though, it's much more expensive to do renovations, compared to outright new construction. If you've ever remodeled an old house, you'd probably understand.

Just tearing things down is fully in keeping with the Trump administration's approach to government....

Trump is purposely using a construction project that his own appointees are making more expensive as grounds to pick a fight and potentially fire his nemesis, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

The Fed building, opened in 1937, began undergoing plans for renovation in 2020 under the first Trump administration. While the architects wanted to give the Fed glass walls to indicate its transparency, three Trump appointees insisted on marble, which was much more expensive. One of those appointees was Duncan Stroik, who is now an architecture professor at Notre Dame. He acknowledged that the appointees on the commission willfully ignored the cost implications of sticking to marble.

“If they wanted to play the cost game, you do a marble facade and you do the glass facade and you compare the cost,” Stroik told the Associated Press. “And you know, they never did that.”

The project is now $600 million over budget, with an expected total cost of $2.5 billion, including additions of an underground parking garage and atria. The Trump administration is now blaming this on Powell, framing him as an irresponsible spender.

It’s good to hear a perspective from a professional . Here in the UK , with our historic roots and period buildings we have strict criteria on the renovation and preservation of these historic properties.

I live opposite a small farm with a wall circa 300 years old , call it nostalgia , I absolutely love the design and historical elegance these buildings bring to this drab modern era of cheap, box culture architecture .

Thank you for your comment on historic roots and national heritage.
I studied architecture in New York but did not follow through. Had three great instructors in Naval Architecture, Modern-Forward-Thinker, and Structural Engineering, who taught how to preserve and renovate in several period-styles.
Fast forward to today- I have retired from service in your national flag carrier airline and for 32 years my family traveled to the UK and enjoyed your culture, people, and countryside heritage.

Only a small fraction of public construction projects (probably <15%) are completed within budget. The larger the project, the larger the overrun, typically. The average overrun is >50%.

Nothing will happen to Powell, they can't touch him. Rates will not be cut anytime soon, they do not have to do that. It would be funny if next meeting they raise rates by 25 bps, that would drive Trump crazy. It will be hike or hold, no cutting.

Apparently Mr. Trump has an ally who will start a 'witch hunt' against Mr. Powell.
And, really bad is, how can I (we if you want to join me) respect Mr.Trump who foul-mouths people who neither agree nor 'kowtow' (perhaps too strong a description?) to him or his policies?
Name-calling; belittlement comments; verbal abuse; etc.
Completely disrespectful, and I wonder what other nation's leaders think but don't say.
