hello everyone. I have been fascinated with renko and am trying to automate it. I have noticed that in mt5 the entries look very different in the backtest and in live conditions. Has any of you faced this issue??

tis true, we are all actually just fooling ourselves

but in fairness I don't know about automated backtesting. I have started to think this is something you have to eyeball a lot and get familiar with and no 2 charts match, do you have wicks or no wicks etc etc.

this thread (link below) may also help you work through stuff, especially the last post by MathTrader he posted today.

Curses you caught me red-handed PG! I wasn't going to post that on this thread because it is a hybrid of 1H OHLC and Renko and probably breaks the rules of the thread. I've been on this thread a long time and have a lot of respect for MathTrader7, I don't want spoil it.
I played with TooSlow's "Highest open lowest open" methodology (https://www.forexfactory.com/thread/...est-open-trade) quite some time ago but never really did much with it and I couldn't make it work with Renko alone. In a moment of - "is it really 2025" despair I got thinking about it again, re-read the rules, ignored some of them and got trading. I've had very good results over the past week (live). One of the rules of the HoLo methodology is - don't trade outside of the previous days daily high/low. This is OK if you are trading multiple instruments, but a bit limiting if like me you are lazy and can only be bothered trading one (DAX)! But I think that Renko helps identify trades/risks in his methodology when outside of the previous daily highs/lows. I can't post this on TooSlow's thread - he wouldn't be happy! Maybe I'll just post the Renko part here and reference the OHLC chart HoLo's.
I haven't backtested this with any tool - I'm with you on the eyeball approach

It's not very pleasant to post on a nearly dead thread.
However overcome by boredom here are some results from today.

I tell you what, if tweaked results continue to show promise then so long as you let us all in I'll look the other way lol !

Matt, I have a question for you, please?
Using an EA, would one be able to code it in such a way that the EA starts and stops at predetermined times such as 08h00 - 22h00?
Secondly, would it be possible to code such EA that it trades on colour-changes of a brick?

Hi PG, Just to follow up on my previous reply, the biggest problem I'm facing at the moment is getting onto a DAX HoLo-based trade that looks anything like the most basic HoLo rules. Maybe this doesn't work for DAX, or at least not frequently enough to keep it interesting (apart from the couple of small trades last week). I will persevere a bit longer, or try Gold on my demo account.

Sometimes I place a stop loss but I prefer to go into reversal and close the operation at a loss. However, I don't worry too much about Gold these days, the trend is clearly up and there is little risk in buying

At last a HoLo (sort of) based trade on gold (demo) - short for ~30 pips, 5 pip bricks. Not sure I'm going to spend a lot more time on this, just add it to the toolkit:
