Politicians are elected not because they have skills in the area they are supposed to manage, they are elected because people like them and believe the talk. Most jobs require that you actually can do the job you are filling, our criteria for the appointment of politicians is wrong. They should be selected for their abilities to do the job.
You are leaving out one important detail: Integrity. It makes no difference how much skill they have to do the job if they lack integrity. If they lack integrity, they will not do what is best for the people. Instead, they will only do what is best for themselves. In other words, they aren't there to serve but to be served.

I totally agree with you, integrity is a key factor in the selection process together with the skill set to do the job. It would have to be a multi faceted selection process.

Why? Politicians do not produce anything only consume. If there was something wrong with the working class, then the economy would go down. Politicians are people with huge ego and no working skill. The end result isn't surprising at all.
