If common sense is being used (and moving averages if you may, not my choice at all) the length should be appropriate to the chart timeframe.

For instance if a H1 chart is plotted a MA length that would be appropriate would be 60 (or half cycle 30) and multiples thereof - 90, 120, 150, 180 etc.

Just sayin'.

Otherwise its just stick a wet finger in the air and pick one. Nothing magically about 20, 50, 100, 200 etc unless they also happen to line up with timeframe being traded.

a Moving Average PERIOD, not length, is chosen to calculate a period of time regardless of timeframe, the values chosen are purely based on trader preference...

a lower period, 9 or 10 or whatever for example, will provide faster signals, regardless of timeframe, a higher period, 100 or 200 or whatever for example, will provide slower signals, regardless of timeframe...

your example makes the least sense, price will always bounce off every MA period, the MA follows price, no one ever claimed they were magical!!!

Moving Averages
Charles Dow started uncovering a few simple facts about how many trading days are available in the Stock Market and on the Daily Timeframe he acknowledged there are 200 trading days, so the 200 MA was established as the yearly measurement and at this time as a trend line. The 50 was later established as a mid-year and the 20 as the monthly moving average. They are average trend lines or guides to allow the trader to view the past data only.

If you did your homework, you would see the Forex Market has 262 trading days per year BUT a lot of traders just use Mr. Dow's acknowledged moving average across all Markets which maybe in correct as this average calculation will change with each timeframe applied, especially within MT4.

Gold had a large price drop today. I thought I'd try a countertrend trade strategy from the base to see how far it would recover. Here is the narrative in pictures (well, charts...)

That is one and the same. Length of lookback period. Of course the period, length, whatever is based on one's preference.

Just saying if one is looking at, for example, a 5 minute chart makes sense to use a length of 12 (or multiples of 12) because 12 X 5 = 60 minutes = 1 hour.

But whatever, what do I know.

I explained the reason for Moving Averages in post 864 above and they are all based on the Stock Market daily timeframe years ago.

Now, you are correct as the Forex Market has more trading days than the stock market and the average value is different on the daily timeframe and will be less on the lower timeframes BUT as I said earlier, most Traders do NOT adjust for this simple factoid - the Forex Market.

another nice countertrend trade, great work sonicvista! your entries started probably just a little bit too aggressively as price was heading up to resistance which if broken would of applied some pressure...

i prefer to leave gaps between orders and generally larger ones as price moves adversely - your vip order at the top was very well picked, your initial targets aiming for ema200 seemed reasonable, but i guess price action told you otherwise!

hello darwati, i do not plan to switch to just following trends, but i am working very hard on improving my trend following and combining it with my countertrend...

of course you will remember the inspiration you provided to me when i started trading this way by highlighting the ability to catch a mini trend after a countertrend, that advice improved my profits significantly and still inspires me!!!
