Here is a video featuring the pattern _ 1 3 where the _ represents a first bar that is not considered as long as the second bar is a 1 (inside bar) and the third bar is a 3 (engulfing bar) . Entry at the close of the 3 .
The pattern is called the Nirvana .
There is at least one other video about the Nirvana . I like this one for it's explanation. About 12 minutes.

This is timely as I have been spending a lot of time studying the relationship between inside bars followed by outside bars on D1, W and M.
I apply the SSS50% to the inside bar which helps to decide on a good entry.

There go all the #1's after that US bank holiday Monday, also helps they are Narrow Range 4 and 7 days too.

I thought it based on the close e.g. last close is below / above the 2 previous closes, but there is more than that, anyone know the formula?

Currently I like the Strat Assistant, but as you know, every candle is more or less a signal, so at first, the system seduces you, then its F*&& you.
I find it much more productive to watch the opens as mentioned by some of the followers, but right now, I'm waiting for the next monthly open, then when everything lines up on any pair, that's my signal to trade.

Are based on the premise of PRICE (any and all-time frames) being either all below or above these points:
Previous and current month open
Previous and current week open
Previous and current day open
Simple, so if you want to put in the work, plot those on a chart, pretty easy.
Here is the AUDUSD today, obviously, it's well below the January month open, which is out of range and not shown.
The rest are easy to see, I even put the PRICE level there for reference. Good Luck.
