The Rain, The Bird and The Worm

True story:

Yesterday I was having a cigar perched under an umbrella in the rain - not ideal, but peaceful nonetheless. And out pops a family of birds to feast on the worms that rise to the surface in need of some high quality H2O - little did I know, this would become one of my favourite trading metaphors of all time!

The Rain = Despair/Panic

The Birds = Conscious Investors

The Worms = Unconscious Investors

Look at it like this, when there is despair in the markets and most Bambi traders are caught offside - they panic - they lose hope, and despair grips their fragile little psyche like a 1 year old baby gripping a blueberry for the first time.

They begin to pop to the surface and "show their hands" - which is completely unconscious emotional behaviour not rooted in reality, experience or indeed even their strategy - they're ripe to be plucked from the market.

That's where the Bird (conscious Investor) comes in - after patiently waiting for hours, days, weeks or even months, the conscious investor enters as the worm exits their positions (either manually or automatically by way of stop loss).

The bird claims the prize... ...and the worm never learns. This cycle is as old as the markets themselves and is just a constant reminder that, as Warren Buffet said;

"The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient."

From the unconscious to the conscious.

From the worm to the bird.

From the amateur to the pro.

This is trading.

The most patient trader who can abstain from emotional and physiological urges gets to observe more data, thus giving him a higher level of certainty to act - and when he does decide to act, fear is nonexistent.

OJ Simpson-itus

Funniest thing always happens in a bear market;

You get influencer guru wannabe gigachads acting like they're OJ Simpsons lawyer trying to argue a case they know is wrong.

If the glove fits, right? When the ships sinking peeps turn into three people;

(1) They admit they were wrong, reassess and act accordingly (2) They deny their lying eyes and continue to nuke their Trading account (3) They secretly close their positions, but tell the world they're still open, until it eventually proves to be unpopular in which case they are already safe from any disasters.

That last one is particularly offensive, it's like the elite of the world going into underground bunkers secretly before meteors strike the earth.

Cowardly.

But It's hard to hold people accountable, nor do I care to really do so - the only thing I can do (and you too by proxy) is to not be (2) and (3) - makes you less of a superhero when you are wrong, humans are more relatable anyway.

+ Your audience will appreciate you serving them rather than your own selfish self interests. Just some food for thought. Admitting when you were wrong, allows a bonding experience greater than any other.

When was the last time I was wrong?

Well... I picked the exact top on Tesla, Bitcoin and the stock market, but I didn't think Bitcoin would crack 60k, I had it stopping sooner - but I was wrong - luckily I didn't bet on it or tell anyone else to bet on it, but the fact remains...

...own your loss like a champion and people will respect you.

Or just deny reality, like the guy who says "I'm not crying, my eyes are hot!".

Social Event Had Me Terrified

About 5 years ago I was "forced" to go to a social event where my old friends and colleagues would be.

I was scared to see them again, not because I didn't like them, but because when I last saw them I told them I was a trader (or on my way to be one) - now five years later I'm sitting there not a consistent trader, trying to figure out my response to the inevitable question;

"How's your trading going?".

Not fun times.

Luckily, since then I've got a strategy that gets me excited about social events!

Now I can walk up confidently suited up in fine clothes.

I can proudly talk about my success with real conviction - no fakery needed.

My strat allowed me to talk about my success openly without having to self censor myself.

Not only that, I can network, make deals and meet new friends - all because my trading allowed me to overcome the fear of social scenarios.

It's not for everyone, nor do I want it to be for everyone.

But for the person who really wants to benefit from a consistent and successful trading career, this is the strategy for you.

Ninja Talks EP 19: Letting The Trade Pass

There's a completely logical but not often used "technique" (if you can call it that) I see only very experienced traders use.

When I do it I can understand why very few people actually stick to it.

Yes it's profitable.

Yes it will make you money both in the short term and the long term.

But you will feel extremely uncomfortable.

The technique I'm talking about is what I call "letting the trade pass."

The basic idea is that Bambi traders jump into trades too early, so as a "letting the trade pass" practitioner your goal is to not jump in early, but instead wait for data to print.

Why do we want more data to print?

Because with each candlestick we gain more and more awareness on the situation.

"Letting the trade pass" simply means just that, you hold off until the "best entry" has passed you by aka you let it pass!

Don't worry you'll have plenty of time to get in on pullbacks and bounces.

Remember price doesn't move in a straight line (only when price reaches terminal velocity does this happen).

Another thing:

As we allow data to print, our certainty level will either increase or decrease depending on if it's proving our thesis correct or incorrect.

Here's the basic steps to follow:

1. Analyze the charts, build a thesis for long or short, if/then/when scenario.

2. Allow data to print (Warning: This can be very uncomfortable) - FOMO will begin to creep in.

3. Let the trade pass - if price confirms your thoughts then allow it to pass by

4. As price is leaving hop on like a train surfer and get a free low risk ride to profit town.

Make sense?

It's all about waiting for data to print and your certainty level to be at an all time high before entering a trade.

This is how you master psychology.

Market Psychology is the forgotten art, invest your time in it and the rewards are exponential.

Keep your cards close to your chest - everytime you show your hand to other players, they'll be able to use that data to grab your liquidity.

The Book of Five Rings

As a martial arts enthusiast I found myself reading (again) my favourite book of all time, "The Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi.

TLDR;

A 16th Century Samurai who had 64 duels to the death, never lost and wrote down all his techniques, thoughts and insights shortly before he died atop Mount Iwato.
Yeah I know, crazy, but true.

Anyway, I found myself reading this book again and I got to the chapter on Footwork where Miyamoto states something super important that relates to trading massively and something that will 100% help you in your finance career.
He said, "Tred strongly on your heels and allow leeway in your toes."

Essentially this is how I saw it as a trader.

The heel is the first principles of trading - aka the core fundamental rules you must follow to build your trading career.

The Toes are redundant techniques, noise, other peoples opinions, fake news and basically anything that isn't fixed, but constantly changing instead.

Here's how I see it, as traders we need to "Tred strongly on our First principles" and not get lost in frivolous escapades to find the perfect strategy - it doesn't exist, nor does it need to - because first principles are the building blocks of a successful career, not temporary dopamine Toes the majority of traders chase each day.

The first principles?

+ Psychology before, during and after a trade.

+ Win Rate

+ Risk

+ Reward

+ Entry/Exit technique(s)

+ Intuition (gained from experience, screen time and age)

+ Money Management and Compounding Tactics

+ Awareness (The core core)

Does this make sense Ninjas?

Operating from first principles allows you to focus on what's real and lasting, not things that are illusory and temporary.

Gamblers, NFT's and Fake Goo-Roos.

In the world of NFTs and crypto trading, engaging in such activities could be likened to participating in a futile endeavor. Presently, there seems to be a dearth of newcomers entering this realm, signifying a stagnation in its growth and potential. It appears to be nothing more than a game of fleeting excitement, comparable to the familiar children's game of hot potato, where individuals aim to pass off their virtual assets before they lose value.

Accounts materialize abruptly, employing botting techniques to amass followers at an astonishing rate, only to subsequently demand exorbitant sums, reaching into the millions, for a mere minting opportunity. The game appears to be rigged, cunningly designed to deplete your financial resources without any possibility of retrieval. Regrettably, at the current juncture, scammers have triumphed over the potential benefits of blockchain technology, overshadowing its promising future.

However, in spite of these circumstances, I still maintain my belief in the potential of blockchain technology. Its transformative power remains intact, but its current state is dominated by unscrupulous individuals seeking personal gain. If we truly desire to witness progress within this space, we must assume the role of builders, contributing to the creation of products that genuinely enrich people's lives and provide tangible value.

Purchasing the latest Ponzi scheme or falling prey to the allure of individuals posting charts of promising coins is a futile endeavor. By the time such information is disseminated, it is invariably too late to reap the anticipated benefits. Instead, we should redirect our efforts toward preparing for the advent of Web 3, an era where gamblers will not reign supreme. The torch shall be passed to the builders, the architects of this new digital landscape.

Therefore, I implore you to adopt an approach befitting these circumstances and act accordingly. Let us embrace the notion of becoming builders, contributing to the future we envision, rather than being ensnared by the machinations of a rigged game.

Let it go pup, let it go.

I woke up from a nap, plodded down stairs and came face to face with my beautiful beagle Pablo, who to my suprise had a filthy disheveled old tennis ball hanging precariously outside the right side of his mouth.

My first thought was, "where the hell did he get that from", my second thought was "He wants me to chase him" to which I did and like a trader looking for his next dopamine hit I shot off in his direction only pausing momentarily to fake him out and gauge his first move, to which he jostled left and right faster than Mike Tyson's peek-a-boo boxing style, immediately evading my first flapping attempt to grasp the now holy tennis ball.

What followed was 30 minutes of exhaustive chasing, ducking and diving around my garden. Because he's so much quicker than me I had to make the decision to move less and feint more.

My goal now was to make him tired.

And I did!

It wasn't long before he gave up due to exhaustion both mentally and physically.

Same tactics go for trading too, chase chase chase with full effort and all you'll do is exhaust your mind, body and capital, but if you take a page outta old Ninjas book and slow things down, feint more, wait for the market (other traders) to exhaust themselves out before committing to a trade yourself? Well then my friend, chasing will be a thing of the past.

It's obviously made a lot easier if you've got a plan, and that's what "Simple Supply and Demand" does, it gives you a formula on how to analyse one hour on the weekend, respond to alerts throughout the week and collect profits before weeks end. It took years to conquer my emotions while trading but now I'm cooler than James Bond during a Casino Royale poker game.
