I think getting new knowledge helps you to stay motivated, especially in the beginning. As you always want to apply the absorbed information immediately.

I like the simplicty in a lot of the dashboards in the thread. I wonder if it would be profitable sticking to the signals of highest conviction in the dashboard in a sixty to ninety day timeframes.

However, the matter is how much time the one requires to devote to demo trading? The less is better.
Is it a step? Undoubtedly, but not a huge one. A real step is commencing from making a first deposit, and opening a first position in live.
