How to Become Emotionless

Becoming emotionless can be a very useful tactic to deal with problems that might be better handled with less heart and more brain. The following is a list of steps to take in order to remove the heart from the situation, and start using your head.

Steps

  1. Meditate. This is one of the better tools to become emotionless. There several are different types of meditation, including Vipassana and Huna, that you can investigate to see which one is right for you. Even the most basic form: closing your eyes and breathing deep, is sometimes enough to loose your emotions.
  2. Dissociate yourself from the situation. Uou can do this by seeing yourself as an observer of the situation and not an active participant.
  3. Think logically, not emotionally. If you can't dissociate yourself from the situation, then take a more logical approach (i.e. facts/figures) than an approach of anger, hatred, fear, etc. Think of the reasons behind the actions and look at things from all sides before making any sort of judgment.
  4. Think of something else. When dealing with a situation that requires the lack of emotion, think of something rudimentary that occupies your mind. A few examples of things to try are: Long division, listing the full names of your entire family, listing all 50 states, naming as many mammals as you can, etc. The key to doing this correctly is to occupy your mind with boringness while remaining aware of the situation and taking it all in.
  5. Realize that you may be wrong. Emotions can cloud our judgment, and there’s always a possibility that you are simply wrong. If you realize this, let it go. Pride will only muck up the situation.

  1. Breathe. Deep breaths will keep you from reacting.
  2. Look them in the eye.
  3. If you need a moment, take a time-out. This will help you center yourself and give you a pause to think about things from a position other than your own.
  4. Keep an open mind.

For the past 2 years i've been involved with using a technology developed by a company called Centerpointe designed to place the mind into a meditative state by way of audio waves through stereo headphones. Further info can be found at this link on the "Holosync Meditaion Program". It is a bit pricey, but i figured it was a tool for self developement and went for it. And i'm sure glad i did! Not only can the technology place the mind into a meditative state, i also use it to take myself into REM sleep cycle for a 90m nap after the London Session close at about 9am Pacific. This practice has allowed me to comfortably trim back my need for actual sleep time. I regularly go to bed at about Midnite to 1am and wake between 4:30 and 5am ready for the day without the use of an alarm, then hit the charts for the NY open. I highly recommend taking a look at the Holosync technology. They will also send you a free demo CD that will explain more and give you a taste of the product.

I downloaded that CD a couple of years ago (the demo) ...it was relaxing, but had to try a couple of different sets of headphones for it to work best.

Wow, this is a great topic. I really believe in the powers of meditation and think it can help tremendously with traders. Did anybody see that article in the Aug/Sept issue of Trader magazine about this? Good stuff... I'd like to hear about anybody else's use of meditation with trading if anyone is willing to share. Great thread, Quicksilver!

Hi,
my 2 cents...

How to become emotionless? Stop caring. Realize it is not "about you". The world could not care less about you as an individual.

Once you stop caring whether you win or lose, but instead "worry" about whether you are following all your system's rules and your money management accurately and strive for perfecting that instead, then you will end up making money at some point while barely even realizing you are.
As it is no longer then about making money or losing money, but about becoming proficient at what you are doing. Making the money will just be the byproduct.
Shifting focus will change things a lot.

Just a thought. (The parallels to coping with women are not coincidental in this regard).

Best regards,

LOL. My beloved wife of 24 years would clam up and be silent for hours and sometimes even days if we had a dissagreement in the first few years of our marraige. I would often think that "it must be me"... Then we had a daughter (21 years ago now), she had the same basic personality as myself, and could trigger this response in her mom also. Hummm. Cogs were turning. . . Then we had our son. His personality is nearly idetical to his mom's. Hahaha. Now my wife know's what it was like being around her in the early years as he will remain silent when upset for hours or days!

Bottom line for me is that it takes two to tango, and in our case of emotions? The market can and will do everything in its power to tick the trader off, best thing to do is what was stated before, just chill out and not give a hoot as to "winning or loosing" the "fight", just go at it with all the proper rules of engagement, never wavering from those rules.

...a pastor friend of mine once told me that the "Enemy of the Right Thing, is a Good Thing".

Do what is "Right" and all the rest will follow.

Enjoyed your post. Very good advice. I have almost always been a big fan of life experience especialy somebody elses.
One thing I came to realize several years ago is that; I would not have any enamies if it wasn't for ME. Really, other people only do good things for me I am the cause of all negative things. If someone cuts me off in traffic, it is up to ME if I get mad. If my wife happens to make a snippy comment, it is up to ME if we have a fight. If the "market should happen to move in a different direction than I think it should, it is up to ME to make the best of that situation. In all cases however the most important thing is " YOU have the oppurtunity to learn from the experience", YOU can grow and that turns everything to a positve for YOU.
Just thought this might help someone.

There is no need to become emotionless. At first, you must control your emotion. It is a great difference.

When you understand the market you emotion will help you not to sleep.

Are we discussing being without emotional in general or just in trading. I think that life in general without emotions would be very futile. However if we are speaking about the place of emotions in our trading decisions the they have no place there whatsoever. Analysing charts and indicators involves mathematical formulas and patterns which will not be swayed no matter what we feel or think. We have to get into the mind of the market because the market will not conform to us. Making mechanical trades is imperative. The only way is to continually study the market rules and follow them no matter what. These include the rules of support and resistance, trend lines and candle formations to name a few.

I would suggest that it is totally impossible to become emotionless. We are human beings, not androids. What we have to learn is to control emotions and be able to make objective decisions in spite of them. All the techniques mentioned in this thread will not remove emotions rather they will help you control them. Huge difference.

A trader can use mechanical trading. There‘ll be emotions, when he discover his account to become empty.

In addition, there are traders watching the market. In 2-3 years experience a part of them becomes someone like artistes.

They could control emotions properly. Mechanical trades will not be imperative at all, while one can use the different way.

I'm in my second year now trading live ... and doing very well ... I'm still here and making pips ...

Like most have said, focus less on the money ... for me it happened when I started controlling my position size of my trades and following my plan. Focus on the execution of your trades ...

Happy Trading ...

How is it possible that somebody becomes emotionless? I don't understand it. If by emotionless you mean to be relaxed and focused on what you are doing (e.g. trading) then "yes" it is possible to take those steps or other methods to fulfill your goal. But there is no way that you can eliminate emotions. To me being relaxed is not equivalent to emotionless. It simply means that you have your emotions under control.

Automatic trading is a good way to eliminate emotions at the time of trade but it doesn't mean that the trader becomes emotionless. It gives you the chance to stay away from your trading station and let the machine do what you were supposed to do and for sure the machine has no emotions. That's why mechanical trading can bring you peace of mind. However, if your system doesn't work well and you keep losing money then emotions approach you and then you may be as desparate as a loser manual trader.
