MT4 Backtesting Threads

I have real trouble with the 'pros' dissing backtesting, what is a TA system apart from a pattern that has been observed in the past? Sure we can't simulate every aspect of the market, but shurely something is better than nothing. Examples of pay off from backtesting are easy to find, where as I go and search on articles Mr Ross has written and I find titles like 'The spritiual aspect of trading' huh? The past does not exactly predict the future, but all trading is built on the assumption that the market will not completly change dynamic overnight.

First time posting here

I downloaded/imported/converted the data followed instruction, but there is only 4 pairs in my dropdown list on the tester.. e.g. I download EUR/GBP, but the tester doesn't let me have the option to choose it for testing...

help please!

I dont know who that Joe Ross is but clearly he doesnt know how to run a proper backtest and trying too hard to overly justify his decision to go forward testing. If your not a programmer and cant understand how to simulate your systems logic into code then you shouldnt diss it with those reasons put forward. I'd love to see his track record (more likely abysmal than ordinary) and even if he does get lucky with his forward results you'll never get the same confidence in trading a system thats been tested by a computer and not prone to human error.

I've been using the download on MT4's (press f2 and then download whichever currency pair you need), cause even though I have the alpari dataset it seems to have lots of mismatch errors for me.

I have been doing EA development for some years now and can say with absolute confidence that Metatrader back tester is not reliable!!! I have noticed sometimes totally random errors that cannot be explained by any rational terms (interpolation, faulty data, etc.).

I have also shows these error to other programmers who have been absolutely amazed, as there was just no rational explanation other than the MT4 back tester can be totally irrational at times!! And sometimes these bugs can just drive programmer insane trying to find bug in the code that is actually in the platform itself !!

I have had a lot of trouble in different broker MT4 platforms (Dukascopy beta, MBT, Alpari UK, Oanda...) especially with command, used to modify stop loss and take profits, and often these orders modifications do not act correctly in backtesting!

I'm thinking of making a video gallery about all of these errors to prove my point... perhaps someday...

MT5 being such a disappointment haven't even tried to code in that.. I'm sure it has even more bugs than MT4... I suppose it is really difficult to make reliable back testing environment for a trading platform...

The whole MT4 is a crap. Only reason i use it, is because of some nice strategies. I would never ever trade with MT4.

Anybody know if an EA was made for manual backtesting on MT5 ?

MT4 build-in tester doesn’t support multi-currency testing and multi –strategy testing.

For example if you have two or more strategies or your strategy works on to or more currencies, it is very difficult to analyze performance analyzing several backtests separately. For this reason you can use MT4ReportParser Forextool , which allows you to combine several strategy tester reports.



Combined report will help you to select correct strategies (or currencies) for your trading portfolio. Last version allows you to load combined report in to monitoring websites.

Is there a way to backtest on MT4 without the strategy tester? E.g. simulating a live feed using historical data?

Hi at all!

MT4, I was doing a good backtesting optimization of a EA.

I found a good combination of input values, it was giving good results,
but he was not finished and I left my computer to work.

I do not know if it finished the backtesting, but I found my computer restarts.
Please, does anyone know if MT4 saves the data of all the test results
in a file inside it, and or in his DB? and how to access them.

I have a good foundation as a computer programmer and development,
I do not know if MT4 does this and where to find.
