Hull and Metal

I have received so much from FF during the last 10 years. Now I must pay back with a contribution.

I do have a great idea. I have made an EA and is trading real money. No luck yet but there must be a great possibility. I cannot share my EA, because it is not in a shape to do it, but I can program a new one within an hour and I will do so - if there will be enough interest for this thread.

First a word of the rules in this thread.

1. It is not for beginners. If you are a beginner, then you are very welcome to follow the thread, but don't ask questions. There are many other threads for people like you - in the matter fact beginners are very welcome in most threads.
2. I want this thread to be a place were people with skills from years of developing strategies and possible indicators and Expert Advisors to work together in making a shot on the grail.
3. Everybody shall share their work. Like every new version shall be uploaded as MQ4 file - NOT EX4. That will support that we can all benefit of each others work. AND - this thread will not end like I have seen many times, with the developer just stopping the thread and the contributors get nothing but a long nose.
4. Bad language and attitudes will lead to exclusion. So will it be if I spot anyone not publishing his/her work but only grabbing other peoples work.
5. This very first contribution will be updated with the results. I expect that there will be more than one solution developed and a number of strategies. Everything will be summarized here.
6. Please do not use Magic Number in your coding. It is only necessary if you will have more than one trade running at the same time and at the same instrument (like Gold).
7. The strategy can be used on other instruments than Gold. I have found until now, that it is important that USD is part on the instrument. But in the end it is possible to use it on stocks, options and you name it. But lets us work on Gold Spot in this threat please.

Now to the strategy. The metals does have quit long runs with loads of pips. Manual traders must be able to earn a lot of money here. I am not a manual trader, I can only trade using EA's. The problem with the long runs is, that occationly there will be very short runs. The direction might shift quickly 5 times in a row, which will lead to losses. And then.... suddently 300 pips in a run. So the problem to solve is - as allways - finding Entry and Exit criterias.

I use the Hull indicator. It is a very fast type of Moving Average. It is not part of the Meta Trader package, but it is available. I will find it for you. Now how do we program with an indicator which is not part of Metatrader. Well that is easy. I will show you.

Strategy:

1. Use Gold Spot (Gold/USD).
2. Timeframe M5.
3. Hull indicater with the settings:
   1. Period 200. This gives the nice long runs
   2. Divisor 2.0
   3. Price - the close price.

   
   
   
   

4. Entry is on colour change on the indicator => change in direction.
5. Exit is when a certain amount of pips has been reached.
6. I run the EA from 1:00 AM GMT and I do only take One trade.
7. If the trade is positive then I call it a day.
8. If the trade is negative, then it often is a sign of the market being flat and undecided at the moment. That often will lead to more false signals. So if it is a loosing trade then I definately call it a day.

These settings are all up to discussion and tests. But it is mandatory that the Hull indicator is the main indicator. You may test some adding indicators. It is also mandatory that we work on Gold/USD in the threat even if it is well possible to use other instruments.

Below is a capture of my screen. Note that the background colour is grey. My background automativally shift in these cases:

1. Black in case of not owning the instrument.
2. Blue if I own it Long.
3. Green if I own it Short.
4. Red if I own both directions (hedged).
5. Grey if I have stopped the trading and I do not own the instrument.

This way I can have many instruments on one screen and within a glance tell which of them I own and in which direction.

I will make a simple EA very soon at put it up here. Of cause only if there will be other contributers. You will get the MQ4 file and you can then see how easy it is to code with the Hull indicator.

But first - let me have some people that find this strategy interesting and will subscribe.

Mladen published "simple (Hull variation) EA 1.1.mq4".
I think it was on Forex-Station where he and mrtools have posted many "simple" EAs and indicators as stating points.
Mladen's write up says this is a bare bones EA to use as a starting point for experiments and further development.
Below is his mq4 EA code with my changes to add a comment for each trade.
This EA requires mladen's 'Hull moving average' in the Indicator's folder.

I have been experimenting with it on several pairs for the past few weeks.
It works exactly as advertised.

If a generous programmer is willing to help I have some ideas to improve results.

Extremely interested in this approach.
HMA Examples with RiskFighter XAU, M5, 200,2, Close and another setting XAU, M5, 200, 34, Weighted.

It is fantastic to find someone with this interest in HMA. Lets do some nice pips. I will dig into the stuff you sent tomorrow. I have started changing my own EA so that it will be readable for other people (I am from Denmark). Hope that will be ready tomorrow too. Then we can begin changing ideas.

I can program, but from scratch and sometimes I have to work on things - I am self educated. But I have programmed at least 25 EA's.

Just follow his instructions - and suddently you have programmed your first indicator. Then do the next video . Don´t stop before you can make you own Holy Grail.

Find the videos where he is starting. Remember to give the videos a "Like" - every time you see a good video. That keep people like him going.

This is not advertizing. I do not know the fellow, but he makes a big effort to give people skills in programming.

He is doing more explaining, but it then can seem more difficult.

How did I learn to programe myself. Those guys on YouTube were not there those days. I just opened some EA's here on FF. Made some small changes. It worked! Did some more and along the road I was able to make my own EA's from scratch.

But enough of that. We are here to make some fine HULL tactics.

Oh, I see that you tried the 34 setting on the speed at the hull indicator. Interesting. However I think that while it does gives more signals, then there also are a higher percentage of fault signals.

But keep tweaking, that is the way to stumble over something good.

Really interested in that strategy. This week I'll start to study it and of course, let you know if I found something interesting. We'll be in touch!

I was really interested in watching this tread developing, particularly when the Developer - RiskFighter - wrote in his first post:

And ONE day later, that is exactly what happened! Not a peep since (5 months).

AND, RiskFighter hasn't even posted a single EA himself!!!!!!

Pete. Take a look again. All the work I had done to start up this thread. And with my offer to make something together with people and together we should let others have the full acces to the results.

But only one person ever responded. And even he, when I responded to his post, did never answer. He just disappeared. Never came back.

After my latest post at the 14 september - 4 MONTHS WENT BEFORE NEXT RESPONSE! And he also never came back. Then came pete999 AFTER 5 MONTHS. And that respond was angry because I have not developed some free robots to him.

What do you expect?? Should I just keep writing and developing by myself? Developing robots for everybody else to use??

No sir. And if you guys cannot come with anything helpfull, then just keep away. Nobody needs lazy free riders.

And yes, I have made some nice profitable robots since - alone and to myself. I need no more development, my monthly income is nice and secure and I don't have to lift a finger.

I expect this thread as being dead.

It's a shame, because I'm only a beginner. But that's the way it is

The fact that you can't spell 'usable' takes away a lot of credibility, for me anyway.

Loftboy, I think you can use both ways to spell useable.

I think my way is the right way. It comes from "use" and "able".
The fact that a spelling is all you can provide to this thread takes away a lot of credibility for me.

Another thing is, that you come from an english speaking country - i don't. Should we make a little contest in who of us are the best in spelling danish words??

Hi. What trading system are you using now?

Finally here is a thread that adopts my fave pair and tool.
Thank for starting this RiskFighter.
My HMA period is 14 of H4, however it is best viewed from M15, that makes it HMA 224. If I break it to to M5 which is your desired TF, that will make it HMA 672.
I will like to know what you think about this. I will be glad to share my only challenge with HMA with you guys if perhaps we can put heads together to resolve it.
